No, the point is that closing them was decided quite some time ago, so they weren't maintained with a longer operation time in mind. It would not have been possible to just keep them running on a whim.

The idea that you only have a limited number of sick days (..you can choose to be sick 10 days a year) is still baffling to me.
Spotify doesn't rip off artists, it's the labels/rights owner/companies who do this. They could easily demand a different payout scheme , e.g. where your fee (minus 20% for Spotify) is distributed only to the artists you actually listened to, and where it doesn't not go into to the overall pool. But they don't and won't.
That is nice and all, and Japan is the master of wrapping things in a delightful manner...but the amount of trash is always staggering.
Reading leaves everything to your mind, your imagination. Audiobooks take some of that away by choice of actors, accents and voice acting. So imho it's not the same, but something else. Not better or worse, though, and ideal for doing something besides reading.
