I'm a professor and it's so incredibly frustrating when students are in your course that have not done the prerequisites. You basically have to give up teaching the planned topic and spend the allocated time on re-teaching math that they should have had already. Imagine taking your kids or little brother swimming, asking them specifically whether they packed their swimsuit, to which they say yes. Then, when you arrive, they say they didn't bring their swimsuit and now you have to go back home.
