I did see an article a long time ago saying that its an easy catch all category because it just basically means used consistently for a repeatable purpose but we dont know what for EXACTLY. And they used to be cheap like here child here's some cheap water shoes to protect your feet while playing the creek or outside you can just slip on and off and when they break or you out grow easy replacement. But now they are expensive and have whole brick and mortar stores just for them.
