To be fair, if the Left does it, it only prompts the centrists and apolitical smartbois to come out of the woodworks and go "durr propaganda" "durr see all politicians are just self-fellating narcissists" "durr I refuse to do celebrity worship because I'm a smarter boi than that"

That's why they're so dependent on bigotry and culture war bullshit. None of their policies benefit the populace but they sell hurting some people as somehow improving other people's lives.

Finns are a great illustration of the difference between "happy" and "content". (in that sense I think the study should call it "contentment" not happiness)

<- makes them your friend (our brain doesn't really bother to distinguish between more nuance than friend/tribe and enemy, everything between that is cultural/social ritual that developed later). That's why we care about celebrities, even without full-on parasocial relationships; that's why celebrity endorsements work: to your brain, it's a friend recommending something by word-of-mouth.

Why, nobody of course, that's why advertising spends millions on celebrity endorsements, because it doesn't work! Okay, serious explanation: our brains were never meant to handle long-range communication or media. Our brain cannot handle that you can "know" a person (who they are, how they look, what they're like) without having met them in person. If you know who a person is, your brain thinks you know them personally, and since you're both still alive, they're not an enemy, which basically ->

Those "memory rooms" gotta be fun for PoC residents and caretakers.

Apparently somewhere in the Bible it says something to the effect (or interpreted as such) that the Antichrist will try to fool people by talking like Jesus, so christian fundies reject anybody who speaks of peace, compassion, unity, helping the poor and downtrodden, loving thy neighbor etc. And "logically", then, a lying, hateful, warmongering, divisive shitbag is a safe bet if you want to avoid the antichrist.

This just in: militaries are removing warfighters from direct combat by utilizing autonomous unmanned sharpened rocks attached to sticks launched by contraptions made of sinew or string and flexible wood. This "bow and arrow" system is predicted to fully automate warfare by the year 35,000 BC.

The US devolving into a shithole where the state can not just not guarantee one's personal safety, but is an active factor threatening it if you don't follow the regime.

Never had a problem with that. It was actually a good choice since it highlighted how lame and bureaucratic the Old Republic had become, and in terms of the story everything was just a pretext for a long-term dictatorial power grab, which is how things work in real life too. The lamer the pretext, the less people care and pay attention so it's easier to change a few laws, nudge a few checks and balances...

It's kind of like the concept of breakaway force in physics - you need a large amount of energy to initiate movement, but a comparatively low amount to sustain movement. Hiring someone to clear up the original mess would've been unaffordable, but now that the place was deep-cleaned once, it's far more attainable to afford - or ask for kind neighbor's help with - cleaning assistance to keep it clean.

I mean, yeah, what do lawyers do beyond talk and string impressive-sounding words together? That's basically an LLM, amirite? (I'd add a /s but I hope you reading this have more comprehension ability than an AI)

They wouldn't want to be immortal in a world that's not a hell for us plebs, though.

Parts: The Clonus Horror (MST3k Season 8 Ep 11), a plot so similar to 2005's "The Island" that it led to a lawsuit.

#21 Exactly. To make the world a hell for the rest of us, that it.

Reminds me of those videos where AI learns to "walk". Instead of complicated stuff like balance and limb coordination it just ended up rolling and lurching around like an amorphous blob. Yes it makes sense in a way. But itinfamously made Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki call AI animation an "insult to life itself" in disgust.

<- and/or by assuming that it is possible for the first strike party to cripple the opponent into a state where they can no longer retaliate (i.e. the "a nuclear war CAN be won!" school of thought that some hawkish human war game strategists also espouse) where the general consensus is highly skeptical that this is how things would play out.

On paper, nuclear strikes "make sense" - devastating, but ultimately localized and definitive strikes instead of prolonged conventional wars yield "better" numbers in terms of cost and casualties. And since that was also the justification for the nuclear strikes on Japan in WW2, and it worked out, there's a lot of material iterating on this point, so AI replicates that bias. It ignores mutually assured destruction by limiting the scope of the conflict in ways that wouldn't play out in reality,->

Had he said it like that? No problem. But using terms like "culturally normal" betrays a worldview that is far more regressive than just political pragmatism.

4 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Ah yes, just what I need, an old white man postulating what "culturally normal" is for me.

Ultimate proof AI is useless and the tech companies know it. Any truly useful tech flies off the selves. If AI were even half as awesome and capable as they claim they'd be drowning in sales but they are desperate to scrounge up more investor capital to keep the lights on as they try to figure out basic revenue streams. So they shove AI shit into their established products so they can claim anybody who did a google search or opened a docx file is an "active user" of AI to lure in investors.

Now I'm not saying this is unique to the USA, I mean look at Japan with their collective lolicon fetish (cue angry weeaboos downvoting and chanting "she's really a 5000-year-old dragon, she's just in the body of an 8-year-old, so it's okay!") but in the US the dichotomy between prudish puritanism and hypersexualization that make up the cultural face makes it so much more noticeable.

<- minors is not just beyond unacceptable, it's synonymous with some of the worst, most debased atrocities imaginable. These two facts exist in a schizophrenic balance in most normal people, but generally that hard line stands, even if prohibition and taboo adds an air of allure in and of itself. Now, being rich and powerful has ALWAYS been de facto defined by the fact that the rules, limitations and morals of the common human quite simply don't apply to you. Now put all of that together.

We're culturally groomed to equate youthfulness with beauty and desirability, and as usual the USA takes it to an extreme. As examples, Britney Spears made an entire career on a schoolgirl jailbait schtick. The time-honored tradition of cheerleading is an excuse to watch shaking underage asses alongside your national passtime. However, we as human being have an innate sense of protectiveness over children and societal consensus has established a hardline stance that sexual exploitation of ->

Can be good or bad, sometimes with a bit of irony, but when it's used in a positive sense there's often a little "this is what bad chads think they are/wish they were" vibe to it. As an "a REAL chad would punch ICE trolls instead of simping over authoritarianism"

Hey internet, next time somebody makes an internet poll to name an ice breaker vessel, can we refrain from the usual "Boaty McBoatface" meme and make this kid's name win?

Oh don't give him ideas. "Y-yeah I was totally trying to infiltrate them and bring down those Adobe PDFs (that what you cool people call them, right? I'm cool too). P-pizzagate, amirite?"

Yeah, I totally get where Morgan Freeman's coming from but it has some of those 80's and 90's "Racism is over if we just ignore it, see, we've put a token member of every ethnicity in every saturday morning cartoon's cast, there's nothing more anybody needs to worry about, American society is perfect now, move along" vibes.

Indeed. Incidentally, while Movie!Hammond was naive and misguided (not just the whole "we can but should we?" issue with the cloning, but if you look at how the park is set up he obviously thinks the newest/most expensive option is all you need, so there are very few safeguards and redundancies), but ultimately likeable, Book!Hammond was more openly a scummy businessman who cut corners and the "spared no expenses" line is obvious conman bullshit.
