My mother did this for us and I was thankful. Could've been a lot worst than just struggling to survive on our own.

I'm gonna say he could hear his friend underground and the head turning was a result of that, also the pounce at the end suggest that too
It also seems to me like the mockingbird is pretty young maybe that's why someone was able to do that. Pretty fucked up
