Pills are made to float. If you tilt your head back to swallow, they float towards the teeth. Tilt your head down to swallow instead.

A speech pathologist told me to put the pill in my mouth, take a big sip of water, then (important) tip your head down as you swallow. It opens up your throat. Works for me. Many people try to tip their head back while they swallow, which constricts their throat.

Put pill in mouth, tilt head down, swallow, drink something. Tossing your head back narrows the throat, ironically.

If you have trouble swallowing tablets/pills, try putting the tablet in your mouth and then drinking from a straw.

My father was a grizzled old chief petty officer during World War Two. I was his caregiver a lot during his eighties. He'd put a dozen pills in his mouth and just swallow them. Without water. Made me shudder.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Alright I might try this. I can swallow tablets/pills just fine with water, but there is this one MFer that always sticks to the roof of my mouth when i tilt my head back and fellas let me tell you, it tastes horrible. So maybe this might help.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's often difficult for small children to swallow pills successfully, and also they might not want to take it in the first place. Since these are cats, she's talking about wrapping the kid up in a towel like you do for a cat you have to give medication to.

My SO thinks I'm a mutant because I can "dry" swallow multiple horse pills. I've always said I have a big mouth ...

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I'll throw back 4 large pills, like calcium and magnesium, and a couple smaller ones all in one swallow without water. My wife struggles to take pills and kinda hates me for it.

I do have to make sure I have enough spit available to moisten the pills though.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least they know you can swallow

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As someone who can dry swallow... Heh, sincerely.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I used to when younger but now I have magic stick and choke pockets.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Took me too long to realize you were saying [stick and choke] pockets and not [magic stick] and [choke pockets]. I was trying to figure out what those two terms were.

But yes, I agree with you there. I can dry swallow but always drink ASAP.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Finally learning to do that consistently was such a relief, although I still get worried that a pill/gelcap will stick to my esophagus and dissolve too early in my gastrointestinal tract if I don't wash it down.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can do that if need be, though my throat doesn't tend to agree with me afterwards.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Antibiotics (and several other medicines) really shouldn't stay in the oesophagus for a long time. Rinse them down.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait... 41F here and I can NOT take tablets. Does this actually work? My tongue just clamps down (up?) On that MF and won't let me open my throat. Does this work? I'll try it and get back to you all (not today though).

Try tilting your head back to swallow pills, and try tilting your head forward to swallow capsules.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Had this problem as a child and well into adulthood. Then my dentist botched a wisdom tooth removal and couldn’t get to a surgeon until the next morning. So he handed me antibiotics, painkillers and a glass of water, saying that I had to take them immediatedly. So I did, to my great surprise. Hasn’t been an issue since.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Have you tried dry swallow? I have a sip of water first. Then I take the pill and move it to the back of my tongue. Then swallow it down. Wash it down with water after if needed

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also works when you're eating. Finish chewing, slip the pill in and swallow like normal. That's actually how I took some of my larger pills

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Clenching my fist while I swallow works for me. Your guess is as good as mine why it works, but I figure your mind can't focus on clamping down 2 things at once or something like that.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I've actually seen clenching your fist (usually with the thumb on the inside) in a pattern on a bunch of lists of ways to suppress the gag reflex. Think it's mostly just redirecting your brain's focus? If you're concentrating on squeeze-count-release-count-squeeze-count you aren't thinking about gagging.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I take bite of food, chew the food and then swallow the pill with that.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This has been my go-to for years. I can't do pills with water.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I sometimes have problem swallowing pills if they're large. Tilting my head back helps a lot for tablets while tilting my head forward helps for capsules since they usually float.
When I use a straw I have no problems whatsoever with either. So much that I sometimes feel the need to check the packaging to make sure I actually took the pill.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do the head tilt back thing with s bunch of water in my mouth. Usually works on the first try, sometimes it takes two tries.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Straw doesn't work for me personally, I have to swallow it with a straight up gulp of water to get it down. With a straw it just floats around in my mouth

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Same boat. I've tried so many tricks. Liquids, even with straws, never worked. I'm subconsciously convinced I will choke. Recently discovered soilds are a workaround. Does not matter what it is, really. If it is something I can chew first, I can swallow pills fine. Pop the pill in after chewing, or just chew the other food without chewing it.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Accept death. Once you are ready to die for your cause, the pull becomes easier to swallow. (or you choke).

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Try and teach yourself to 'chew' without actually chewing on the tablet. It can take a little practice (Use M&M's or similar), but once you get the hang of it it works like a charm, two 'chews' sip of water and down it goes.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My favorite is to chew up a bit of food until it's ready to swallow (bread, fruit, etc) then just put the pill on top and swallow - great for things like ibuprofen with bitter coating

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Basically the idea behind bread pills. Alas, if I know there's medication in it, I simply cannot. My mom tried everything when I was a kid lol, and I'm still struggling with it to this day. Even liquid meds fuck me up sometimes, I was taking freaking cherry flavoured liquid tylenol after a surgery and still had to psych myself up to swallow it. It was a liquid! That tasted like candy! Why was it so hard, brain? WHY???

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How are you with swallowing spoonfuls of jam/custard/applesauce/similar foods? You can hide whole tablets in there and possibly trick yourself into automatically swallowing since that's what you would usually do with those foods. Meds that can be safely crushed like tylenol can also be mixed in so there's nothing to really hold on to in the first place.

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

Just make sure you mix the meds into a single spoonful, not an entire cup of applesauce. Made that mistake with penicillin right after I had my wisdom teeth removed.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Doing this is why my girlfriend hates anything with strawberry jam. Her mom used to put all her medication in a spoonful of strawberry jam and make her eat it. She's 33 and still can't eat it. Just thinking about strawberry jam makes her gag.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My father has that with cherry wine but... For different reasons :-p body memory is a powerful thing.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Take your pills with a thicker drink, a smoothie or malt... with a thick straw of course.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Meanwhile when I know I have to take a pill I start salivating. Like ready to vomit level of salivation. Then the pill just glides down

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I find using a thicker drink, like milk or orange juice helps a lot. It’s like your mouth doesn’t feel it right as it tips over so it doesn’t seize up.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had this issue for YEARS (do you know how bad tylenol tastes when it's dissolved in water? Cause I do). My trick is to get enough water in my mouth that I know I can swallow it in one go without issues. If the pill is heavy enough to sink, I tilt my head back, drop the pill in and swallow. If the pill floats, I tip my head forward, pop it in and do the same, like taking a shot. Either way, I want the pill as close to the back of my mouth as possible.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Slapping the sides of your neck under the jaw can desensitize the throat and make it easier for the body to relax and accept the pill.

It helps when there's already a pill in the mouth, but no water is left in a bottle that was picked up to wash the pill down.

I always pilled a cat with the cat facing away from me. This seems backward.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was really expecting one of them to end very differently.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This works for some cats, but my chewed up fingers will tell you that some people’s barn cats don’t give a fuck if they chomp you to bits when you try to deworm them. Also, fun tip if the cat doesn’t want to swallow, sometimes gently blowing onto their nose works. Do they hate it? Yes, but at least they’ll probably swallow.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"I like to pet cats." "Oh, yeah, some people do that. I just like to give every cat I see a pill."

OMG PLEASE I HAVE TO KNOW

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just raw dog them dry. Never had any issues unless it's a super huge pill. Then a sip of water after.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok so completly unrelated but half the time i see (age)M/F my mind goes to "what MOS is that and what does that have to do with this?"

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I shove the MFers down my throat and then drink

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Practise with tic-tacks. My mother got me to take pills when I was super young because I hated the liquid medicine.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wasn't certain so I set up an experiment. In the last 5 minutes I tried to swallow 96 pills, only 74 of them went down on the first try. So I wouldn't call it guaranteed and also the walls might be melting?

2 years ago | Likes 231 Dislikes 2

if the pills are 200mg ibuprofen, for every 100lbs you weigh you need 90 pills to end up six feet under

Melting walls? What pills were those? I swallowed antidepressants by the mouthful but I only fell in a really good sleep and was woozy enough to get my ass fired the next day!

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I forgot the brand name but the active ingredient was acetawalzarmetlen.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For me, unless it is a very small tablet, I have to use a flavored drink of some kind, or a spoonful of yogurt or maybe cream cheese if it's a particularly big pill

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Try practicing with tictacs

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It does! Its how my mom taught me!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When i was a kid i would put pills in peanut butter, cuz then i could chew it a bit before swallowing

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It took me a looooong time to overcome that tongue on the roof of the mouth reflex. Best of luck with it!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Practice with choco M&Ms

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On the other hand I can take those inch long horse pill antibiotics dry.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have so much gratitude for not having this problem. I take ~15 pills every morning and if I had to take each of them one at a time it would take forever. I just throw the whole handful in my mouth at once, then immediately drink a full glass of water.

2 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 0

What in the sam hill, my throat would close up and those bastards would be trapped in there for a week.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have the "can't swallow some pills" problem (overactive gag reflex, I guess?) and I plan to just lay down and die I guess when I need to take that many pills.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same. I take a LOT of pills, and I'm able to drop them all in the back of my throat and swallow them down with a gulp of water. Though sometimes they decide not to space out and go down together and it physically hurts lol

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

my friend looked at me like i was insane when i took my pills he’s like “how did you do all those at once” it was 3 caps and a tablet

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Out there just deepthroating medication

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10 for me. I throw them all under my tongue so I don't have to taste them as I'm grabbing my drink. Then use the drink to swish them back over my tongue to swallow.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I take 12, and do it the same way.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I only take 4, but 2× a day. I full up my mouth with water first then tip my head back and drop the meds in and swallow.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't put pills on my tongue because some of them can be bitter. I drop it right behind my bottom teeth, then just take a drink

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never worked for me. I tried all the "tricks" and the only thing that works for me is to put the pill at the very back of my tongue and quickly drink something. Even then I sometimes mess it up. 35F, if it matters.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Put tablet on the back of the tounge (not so far to avoid choking) put the tip of the tounge towards the roof of the mouth, then swallow. This helps me a lot. Let me know if you tried and if it works for you too.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I take big pills/lots of them by eating a banana. I'll chew up a piece of banana first then toss the pill/s in and just swallow my banana. If I trick my brain into thinking it's food, we're all good.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look down, like chin the chest and then swallow.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also remember/remind yourself that when you're eating anything, the gob of chewed food you swallow is much larger than the tiny little pill you're about to swallow.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

its weird realizing im the weird one for being able to swallow pills with zero issue. like i can and have taken pills without water if i just couldnt get any but needed to take my pills. strange feeling thats very much not a typical thing lmao

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My wife is the same age as you and has a similar issue. Hers is partly genetic somehow (her father's side of her family all have the same issue) and partly due to choking on food when she was way young. I've been having to crush Tylenol and open gabapentin capsules into applesauce all summer, as she's been laid up due to a major ankle fracture and repair surgery. Chewable ibuprofen also gets to be annoying. I'll have to have her try this trick.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've wondered if a big part of my issues taking pills was because I had monster tonsils as a kid. Had tons of food issues because I could feel every bite, then the first time I had to really take medicine was after they were removed and I had big honking wounds in my throat, never had gotten good at it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

applesauce or yoghurt ( we use that in the hospital on older folks who have difficulty swallowing , its better than water

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Chocolate frosting was the #1 recommendation when I last had a medicine I struggled to take but alas it did NOT help me. Chocolate milk worked somewhat, if you have a capsule you can safely open and empty out.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

chocolate frosting is too sticky , not really going to help

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I put a bit of water in my mouth first so the pill can float. Then fill my mouth full enough to make one big gulp, usually gets it down.

2 years ago | Likes 282 Dislikes 0

This! I have found my people.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hard same. I take around 14 pills at night for sleep, so i just put a decent amount of water in my mouth, toss in every single one of those motherfuckers at once and swallow with more water.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Me too. But they’re M&Ms

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do this too more or less, mouth full of liquid,. Drop the pill into the liquid and swallow then Follow up with a few more mouthfuls to wash it down properly

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As long as it's not a chalky MF packed with a bit of spite. Had a few that decided even with a bit of liquid in there that they'd stick to the sides/roof of my mouth, and it was always the ones that taste awful.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just have a sip of water, and then I dunk the pills in.
To much water before dropping the pills in, and my mouth seems to momentarily forget the "how to swallow" section of the body manual

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same. Tilt head upwards with heavy pills, tilt head down with the floaters. I despise the floaters.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes I fill my mouth with water, tilt my head back, and have my fiancé drop the pills in my mouth then I swallow them. I call it "feeding the fishy" and he does not find it amusing.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

this is what works for me. the only time it has failed me is when I had to take potassium pills for a couple days. those things are gigantic and crumble into grit on the slightest provocation. you'd think that breaking apart into smaller pieces would make it easier, but it really doesn't

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

I was on the most vile anti-malaria drug at one point. It stick in my throat, broke down, and caused irritation at the spot where it happened.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Uuugh. I had that happen with a pretty caustic antibiotic (Clindamycin). My throat was burned for days.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Oh god I had to take clindamycin earlier this year. Absolutely can't swallow pills so had to pop them open, mix it with something, and then choke it down. It was absolutely foul. (chocolate milk worked best of the things I tried, for anyone struggling). And then after suffering that for a week, I broke out in full-body hives. Got me out of taking any more of it, I guess?

I used to be able to do that, but one time I took something, dramamine, I think, that was so foul that i basically developed an aversion to letting any pill touch my tongue.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah Dramamine tastes like sadness.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same, doesn't matter what trick or technique I try more often than not pills wont go down. Most of the time I say fuck it and start chewing.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Teach yourself to 'chew' without actually chewing on the tablet. It can take a little practice (Use M&M's or similar), but once you get the hang of it it works like a charm, two 'chews' sip of water and down it goes.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Be very careful with this, especially on prescription meds a ton of them say do not chew for a reason

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's the doctors problem not mine, they know I have issues with pills. And every med can be dispensed as a liquid, they just have a shorter shelve life in liquid form.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

Yeah, guess it's better to be right, but dead...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's your problem, not the doctors. If millions of people can figure out how to get uncooperative cats to take pills, you can figure out how to get a cooperative human (yourself) to do it.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

You're assuming that the sub-conscience and the conscience minds cooperate, they rarely do.
