I went to high school in Texas. We definitely had a very graphic sex-ed course that taught us about all kinds of contraception.

I read that as "offers free bitch control" and became seriously confused...

40% drop in teen births!? What are you doing giving birth to teenagers in the first place!? 9 months, people! Shyt or get off the pot.

Best form of birth control, gay sex.

Totally not a virgin if you have anal sex. It's still sex.

Grew up in Utah and part of it is having smart sex ed teachers. There is a loophole that they can answer any direct questions in class. 1/2
So she had a "questions day", we were told to think of what we wanted to know, and the next day she did nothing but answer them.

It's proven time and time again, teaching abstinence is not effective. Let's get on a plan that works. Teens are gonna fuck.
But also, they are going to make sweet, sweet love... Right?
AIComments
Maybe we could give them a ring, and have them do some sort of pledge thing, ya, I'm sure that would do the trick.
crowey92
can you please tell that to teenage me.....i think he missed something
HoleCamels
"Teens are gonna fuck" that gets my vote for quote of the year
Teaching abstinence isn't entirely uneffective, it's just equiping teens with knowledge so they can make an informed decision is moreso.
RenDriver
People will carry on listening to their hands and saying abstinence is god's way so it must be done that way.

Yeah, my wife and I were virgins until the honeymoon AFAIK, but I think having safe sex any time is best. Only go raw when you want kids

Dont know what part of texas they are talking about. My class was fairly extensive regarding all forms of birth control

But not all of them are. Some of us are capable of not having sex. It's not that difficult actually.

There are always exceptions, obviously. But if you're in a situation where you've got lots of opportunity, odds are you're gonna fuck.

Things have changed: "most Texas school districts teach abstinence-only sex education."
I got taught sex-ed in like 2002 and we learned contraception. Hard to believe it changed and went backwards.
There was a major shift towards abstinence only ed in 2008-9 across the whole US, but it hit some states (like Texas) harder than others.
That's weird if true. Seemed like we were moving away from that kind of teaching. (1/2)
I learned sex ed in middle school from a female gym teacher who even taught us different positions. (2/2)
That's ass backwards. As crazy as it sounds, Texas is moving towards being more liberal. My city, Houston, even has a lesbian mayor (1/2)
Yeah, I've heard about your mayor. She sounds pretty awesome. But still, most of Texas is not Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, etc.

Nah, no citation needed. Even if this is wrong the idea is fundamentally correct. You teach people about sex and give them access to all(1)
TheChinamanIsNotTheIssue
Typically when someone is properly taught a subject they aren't going to make anywhere close to the level of mistakes as someone who wasn't

Even our best theories need to be tested. Citations are always important. Once a theory cannot be proven wrong, it is no longer science. [1]

MarquisDeSadeVII
Yes. Free.
GoBlue
So I guess that means that the companies that make the birth control are giving it away, huh?
kivalo
And the people manufacturing it aren't being paid a wage?
TastyBrainMeats
No, it means that an anonymous donor footed the bill for the program, so to the rest of Colorado, it was free.
That means the government is giving them away.
Haxbrygd
Ergo, taxpayers are giving it away. It's not free if the taxes you pay each year cover the cost. Stop saying it's free, because it's not.
That means the government is PAYING for it. And where does the government's money come from? Taxes. So we're still paying for it.
Nope. The amount of tax you pay compared to tax taken, compared to the percent of the budget being spent here, means you ain't paying.
FlatPlutoSociety
They were all paid for by one anonymous donor. http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/10/health/colorado-teen-pregnancy/

It means that it's viewed as integral enough to the common good to be supported by taxpayers.
PEOPLEONTHISSITEARESTUPID
"Supported by taxpayers" is only "free" to about 50% of the country. The half that doesnt pay tax.
"supported by taxpayers" =/= free
So they're subsidized. Not free.
This wasn't taxpayer supported. It was funded ($23M) by an anonymous donor. So to the other 5,268,366 Coloradans, it was free.
Thanks for clearing that up

I live in Texas and we were taught a lot more than abstinence. Check your facts. Provide your sources.
eskimo93
Thank you! I learned about condoms at my Texas high school.
MysteriousPineapple
This! I grew up in a primarily Hispanic & old school Catholic area of TX and we were definitely taught more than abstinence only
harlequinromance
I was taught in Angleton and we were told NOTHING about sex ed. We also had a daycare attached to our high school.
giantpikachu
My school had that too! Freaked me out when I moved here.
Kavian
DFW, and we had normal sex ed. STD pics, videos of babies splitting women open, etc.

(2) pregnancy rate. So, it seems to be more a cultural issue, not an education issue.

I'm sure it's mostly poverty mentality people that just don't give a fuck (you know what I mean) and see kids as an advantage monetarily
(1)Same here. I'm from a small rural Texas town and we learned plenty about birth control. Minorities here have a significantly higher teen
Daephyl
I grew up in Texas. Not once was sex even mentioned in high school. Or checkbooks. Or how to pay your bills. Or college applications.
FlyinHawaiian13
I visited Texas last month it's nowhere near as backwards as the internet tries to make it seem. Granted I only stayed around San Antonio.
chickenwingking
Depends on the school district. Some will let parents opt in for Sex Ed and some only teach abstinence.
Ohmyglobwhat
They got rid of sex ed classes after 2008, so if you were in highschool before that you received sex ed.

Honest question - how long ago was that? And I suspect Houston varies from the rest of the state.
Houston is by far the most religious of the big cities in TX it's pretty much opposite of Austin. Houston is big on education of all kinds.
And this was 2010. Good thing I got my sex end from a couple different CA schools.
TheuserformerlyknownasDan
It doesn't I live outside of houston only difference is more people
Graduated a houston;/Katy HS. Literally nothing about sex. Teacher told us not to do it and to read the chapter at home. No questions.
I moved to Houston in 94 and went to middle school and high school there starting then. And I don't disagree that it varies, and that (1/2)
some of the small, conservative towns can be out of whack, but I can honestly say that the bulk of us get the education. HOWEVER I know(2/3)
plenty of people that have disregarded the importance of condoms anyway because they are Catholic. (3/3)

From Texas. My school had 1100 students (550 girls, assumed) of which 63 girls were pregnant at one time.
There was a girl in my graduating class that accepted her diploma in a wheel chair bc she was so pregnant, walking would induce labor.
We had quite a few at my graduation... Tis a sad thing.

Also, the body naturally (spontaneously) aborts 50% of fertilized eggs, BC actually LOWERS the amount of abortions, by preventing the fert.

papadezelda
We could just get rid of abortions and welfare and it'll force people to act responsibly. You shouldn't get rewarded for being stupid.
whutserface
Which is why this comment of yours is in the negative.
Yeah, I think people in America want a back up plan in case they do something stupid. You don't want a baby, don't have sex. It's easy.
Yep, fuck all you married people who don't want a child right now. You get to have a sexless marriage and call it responsibility.
I guess you haven't heard of contraceptives. Please don't be stupid.
That was actually my point. All the people saying "just don't have sex." They should be able to have all the sex they want because BC exists
I looked up the statistics a few years ago. Less than 1% of abortions are due to rape and incest. To me that's not a valid argument.

I'd rather pay for contraception...but that's none of my business
No I know haaha just quoting the joke.
MrPowerMetaller
Oh god, if they don't get education and contraception it'll be like London's 3rd and 4th zones.
Beegeezee505
Seriously. Why the fuck should the government pay for contraceptives? Buy your own fucking pills and shit.

1. Those who can't afford pills or condoms are going to have sex. Maybe they shouldn't, if they can't afford it, but they will. Then we have
2. children being born into those circumstances--if they couldn't afford BC or condoms, they aren't going to be able to afford children.
3. In one way or another, the burden will come to fall on other people. Not always, but often. Cut 'em off at the pass.

I can't describe the humongous level of facepalm the American "abstinence" thing causes in me as a European
DoctorWatchamacallit
*red state American abstinence thing. much of America agrees with you, like the state of Colorado (see original post).
Whydopeoplekeepcallingmethat
It causes a lot of us here in the States a humongous amount of facepalm as well.
As an American, I don't get it either. Sex is a completely natural thing. People invented the moral implications to control others.
Scutterbotch
I just find it fucking hilarious that their idea of preventing pregnancy is "dont have sex". So primitive when we live in a world with BC.
BowtieAskew
Well it is the only 100% effective form of BC. Though it's idiotic to not teach about other forms b/c people WILL have sex.
yes and not eating is the only 100% effective form of not becoming obese.

Abstinence-only education also typically doesn't cover things like STDs, so these kids also don't know how to avoid getting the clap.

All they have to do is about giving high fives to avoid a clap. Duh.

Actually, I live in Texas, and in my high school sex ed class the teachers made a big point of talking about STD throughouly.

It's easy, don't have sex until marriage.
I went to Catholic school. I heard this more often than I wanted to. Wound up losing my virginity two months after getting to college.
Bittsy
I'm from OK and they only taught us about abstinence in 6th or 7th grade. They showed us gross pics of people with STDs and stuff. And 1/?
they had some guy come in with a story about his wife having AIDS or something. It wasn't something we could relate to as kids...and 2/?
didn't stick with most of us, tbh. I learned by research online, lots of kids knew NOTHING about sex in any form or manner...
We ended up having a girl pregnant in 9th grade, gave birth in 10th. And then just more and more each year after that.
1. This is patently false, and also misleading. Misleading-The Texas law isn't "abstinence-only education" it's "abstinence-first education"
2. False-STD's are absolutely TYPICALLY covered in Texas.
HocEstRidiculam
I think STD's were the only thing we ever covered in my HS health classes...
Not just 'not covers'. Actively gives misinformation in hope to scare teens off sex, but really it scares them of off using birth control

Yeah, sounds like you're saying don't put a plastic bag over your grandmother's penis. xD
Most Texas schools do show horrifying STI pictures as a "scared straight" abstinence encouragment.
Here's what I want to know: how effective is that?
There were a lot of teen parents in my high school.

The law in Texas does NOT prevent you from discussing other methods it requires abstinence to be taught as the primary method.

Fun fact: Until around 1915 (if I'm remembering correctly), the Catholic church didn't consider it a child until it moved in the womb.

More fun fact: A child until it's first month after birth in the Old Testament isn't considered a life... it's the father's property.

Most Pro-lifers only support unborn people. Once you're out, they support death penalties and wars.
True that, but birth control (the pill) is extremely cheap -- $3-10/month (that's a 1-2 days of lunch $!), and clinics are available (1/2)
(2/2) in NC, at least, and we're a right-leaning state. I'm all for making b/c easily accessible, but I've got my own to pay for. Cheers!
shadykit
Depends on the pill. There's only one that's between $3-10 a month that I know of, that that one made me crazy. The one that was good (1/2)
That's interesting, w/all the generic versions of the pill. Swing by a local (public) university for a CARE Package - those are 100% free :)
Mine sure didn't. They sent me away with a prescription to be filled elsewhere and the $100 one was also generic. Ah well, past is past now.
for ME was upwards of $100 a month, and as a college student with no insurance, I was SOL to get it. Asking for the insurance I pay (2/3)
for to cover the medications I'd like to take for my own personal reasons is not asking for a handout. (3/3)
It's not so easy in Texas since they cut funding to Planned Parenthood. :(
Planned Parenthood is sketchy. http://nafcclinics.org/clinics/search
Unless you can't have hormones. Then it's extremely expensive.
bookwyrm17
Not everyone can be on the pill, and not everyone can be on generic versions of the pill which are the cheaper ones, unfortunately...
? Pharmacies will fill generic if you ask. Or, here's an alternative solution for everyone: $5 box of condoms. WAY cheaper than a baby!
No - body chemistry means sometimes generics can have nasty side effects. Sometimes the only pill that works is one of the expensive ones.
It can be a pain in the ass to find a type that works for you.

LordXeras
coincidentally that logical fallacy is called "The Texas Sharpshooter"
40% drop is stat from 2014. TX remains 4th highest birth rate state, nationwide drops doesn't change that.
But it says nothing about the drop Texas may have had, or where Colorado is on the list...Colorado could be 1, 2 or 3. (1/2)
I'm not saying CO is, I'm just saying selective use of stats can be very misleading.
This is very easy to look up. They are comparing apples to apples, but most people here are quick to dismiss this as liberal propaganda.
LadyBith
No they are comparing oranges to apples. The two statistics, while related (fruit), are not the same thing (apples/oranges).
alextyrian
Compared to peak birthrate, so yeah, birthrate dropped in every state.
Unfortunately, you're wrong: http://thenationalcampaign.org/data/state/texas The teen birth rate only dropped 5% from 2010.
Right next to it says 43% from 1991. It all depends on what data you look at. How would I be lying if i'm just citing the website?
I didn't say you're lying, did I? No I didn't.
Your link didn't state the difference from 1991 (SQL errors) but this one points it out, that said, it's still 5th highest in teen pregnancy
arbogast

Mostly because free birth control is available nationwide now. Those stats are amazing. Thanks for sharing.
redsalmon
Thank you ACA! Free birth control was among the first provisions to kick in for ObamaCare.
Just to be clear, this data started in '91. So...
I know right? I was amazed at how much it's dropped and that it's dropped nationwide.
Yeah, especially since free contraception is now available nationwide. Strange coincidence. Also strange that places with abstinence (1/2)
only education still have more teenage pregnancy than other places. It's like it doesn't work as well or something. (2/2)
I say promote both and let people pick which one is right for them. Knowledge is power and freedom to choose is wonderful.
So teach normal sex ed. They can choose to abstain even when they know the facts about it. Knowing more about sex doesn't cause sex.
Snooj
Legit question: Are these statistics per capita? Because with Texas' population, it's likely to have more of anything than any other state.
shhh, dont try to use your logic! just bash on texas like the rest of the hivemind!
Convenient to blame disagreement on a hivemind. Stats used are pop%, the question is illogical.

True, but TX has 38% hispanic pop, CO 23%, not enough of a disparity to explain the large gap.
Are you talking about citizens? Texas has a shitload of non-citizen hispanics.
They will not be counted with census birth statistics, and I'm sure CO has the same.
The parents will not be counted; their children will. That's the whole point. It skews the birthrate numbers.
mawleen
Are you serious? 38% of 26.45 mil is 10 mil. CO population is 5.3 mil. Hispanics double the CO pop, wtf disparity do you need?
The large gap in percentages of teenage birth rates.... not total population.
"quinceanera" is spanish for "bang my 15 yr old daughter"
Anecdotes aren't evidence, champ.
http://thenationalcampaign.org/data/compare/1680/7787 can look by race, white non hispanic still way more then Massachsetts
which are you saying is 1 percent higher? what measure for which states?
A percentage drop can only by equivalent to a per capita drop and a rate indicates per capita.
Okay, the "rate" statistics weren't clear. I still feel like a lot of facts are missing.
http://kff.org/other/state-indicator/teen-birth-rate-per-1000/
That can't be right. It puts Maine down near the bottom. If I go elsewhere, I'll see even *more* teen pregnancy?
Unless I'm missing sarcasm I think you might be reading the info wrong. Lower/bottom = less teen births. Top of list = more.
colacp
No, OP is mixing facts that aren't apples to apples.
Its pretty simple, studies show that abstinence only sex ed leads to 50% higher birth rates than comprehensive sex ed. Additionally,
easy access to reliable birth control reduces unintended pregnancies and abortion.
Texas isn't an abstinence only state. OP is spreading false information from the start.
Seriously I live in Texas and I took sex ed 3 different times!

Yes. Free.
GoBlue
So I guess that means that the companies that make the birth control are giving it away, huh?

And the people manufacturing it aren't being paid a wage?
TastyBrainMeats
No, it means that an anonymous donor footed the bill for the program, so to the rest of Colorado, it was free.
MarquisDeSadeVII
That means the government is giving them away.
Haxbrygd
Ergo, taxpayers are giving it away. It's not free if the taxes you pay each year cover the cost. Stop saying it's free, because it's not.
GoBlue
That means the government is PAYING for it. And where does the government's money come from? Taxes. So we're still paying for it.
MarquisDeSadeVII
Nope. The amount of tax you pay compared to tax taken, compared to the percent of the budget being spent here, means you ain't paying.

That was actually my point. All the people saying "just don't have sex." They should be able to have all the sex they want because BC exists

They're not pro-life, they're pro-birth. If they were pro-life they would support the survival of the infant and mother, too.
gribblet
*Don't care to have the gov't mandate taxes to support it. Community/church/nonprofit/neightborly assistance is what they want. Not gov't.
cliathwolf
But they don't mind the gov't making it really hard for private clinics to provide services.
McFarvo
^true for a lot of pro-life folks. They adopt. They give to charity. They volunteer. +1
Cystman
If we could count on everyone to do what was right by their fellow man, we wouldn't have nearly the problems we do.
hihellogoodbye
I know, why can't everyone care about everyone?
Cystman
Except that no one can count on that happening and the communities that need it most can spare the least themselves.
Cystman
Instead we get politicians&businessmen cherrypicking doctrine to claim Godliness for $/polls while ignoring what it means to live in Christ.
gribblet
Amen to that. Seriously. It's a shame.

To be fair, disagreements on when a person gets to be protected as a person is a serious issue that gets glazed over on the 'Choice' side- 1

Fun fact: Until around 1915 (if I'm remembering correctly), the Catholic church didn't consider it a child until it moved in the womb.
TheRealCJ
More fun fact: A child until it's first month after birth in the Old Testament isn't considered a life... it's the father's property.
Liquidbullets
source on this?
twilightvulpine
Then they bitch about the homeless and welfare recipients.
Pencillin
That infant is just a lazy mooching welfare queen!
Kimbongpal
Most Pro-lifers only support unborn people. Once you're out, they support death penalties and wars.
gribblet
True that, but birth control (the pill) is extremely cheap -- $3-10/month (that's a 1-2 days of lunch $!), and clinics are available (1/2)
gribblet
(2/2) in NC, at least, and we're a right-leaning state. I'm all for making b/c easily accessible, but I've got my own to pay for. Cheers!
shadykit
Depends on the pill. There's only one that's between $3-10 a month that I know of, that that one made me crazy. The one that was good (1/2)
gribblet
That's interesting, w/all the generic versions of the pill. Swing by a local (public) university for a CARE Package - those are 100% free :)
shadykit
Mine sure didn't. They sent me away with a prescription to be filled elsewhere and the $100 one was also generic. Ah well, past is past now.
shadykit
for ME was upwards of $100 a month, and as a college student with no insurance, I was SOL to get it. Asking for the insurance I pay (2/3)
shadykit
for to cover the medications I'd like to take for my own personal reasons is not asking for a handout. (3/3)

It's not so easy in Texas since they cut funding to Planned Parenthood. :(
gribblet
Planned Parenthood is sketchy. http://nafcclinics.org/clinics/search
Daephyl
Unless you can't have hormones. Then it's extremely expensive.
bookwyrm17
Not everyone can be on the pill, and not everyone can be on generic versions of the pill which are the cheaper ones, unfortunately...
gribblet
? Pharmacies will fill generic if you ask. Or, here's an alternative solution for everyone: $5 box of condoms. WAY cheaper than a baby!
bookwyrm17
No - body chemistry means sometimes generics can have nasty side effects. Sometimes the only pill that works is one of the expensive ones.
bookwyrm17
It can be a pain in the ass to find a type that works for you.
Topcat123
2012 teen birthrates dropped nationwide. Colorado -56% Texas -43% http://thenationalcampaign.org/data/compare/1698

CyberAkuma
It's almost as if no side in any debate is above skewing the facts for their own personal agenda...
Topcat123
Yeah I think sometimes we're more interested in proving how right we are that we forget to look for the truth.
DickInAToaster
And Texas has a fuckton more Mexicans than Colorado. And they have babies left and right.
tarataqa
As a Tex-Mexican, true dat.
bernatchezloveslamp
As a Mexican and a father of a 3 year old (I'm 22) I agree
BronYAurStomp53
Thank you for trying to show the whole picture, as opposed to using selective statistics to make your point.
PMMeTitsForPuns
I realised the other day that that song title has the word "Brony" in it.
BronYAurStomp53
Dammit man
LordXeras
coincidentally that logical fallacy is called "The Texas Sharpshooter"
damadamagoyolur
40% drop is stat from 2014. TX remains 4th highest birth rate state, nationwide drops doesn't change that.
BronYAurStomp53
But it says nothing about the drop Texas may have had, or where Colorado is on the list...Colorado could be 1, 2 or 3. (1/2)
BronYAurStomp53
I'm not saying CO is, I'm just saying selective use of stats can be very misleading.
damadamagoyolur
This is very easy to look up. They are comparing apples to apples, but most people here are quick to dismiss this as liberal propaganda.
LadyBith
No they are comparing oranges to apples. The two statistics, while related (fruit), are not the same thing (apples/oranges).
alextyrian
Compared to peak birthrate, so yeah, birthrate dropped in every state.
kmikl
Unfortunately, you're wrong: http://thenationalcampaign.org/data/state/texas The teen birth rate only dropped 5% from 2010.
Topcat123
Right next to it says 43% from 1991. It all depends on what data you look at. How would I be lying if i'm just citing the website?
kmikl
I didn't say you're lying, did I? No I didn't.
kmikl
Your link didn't state the difference from 1991 (SQL errors) but this one points it out, that said, it's still 5th highest in teen pregnancy
arbogast
There you go, trying to use facts and figures when obviously this should be about dumb republicans and stupid Texans.
PaperCl1p
Glad to see someone is awake
Topcat123
Hey......don't mess with Texas.
arbogast
Except the heat, that could be messed with. Downward, any way.
Topcat123
Yeah, it's the same here in Alabama. Hot and very humid.
WhySoSiri
Yes please do
weirdcalculator
Mostly because free birth control is available nationwide now. Those stats are amazing. Thanks for sharing.
redsalmon
Thank you ACA! Free birth control was among the first provisions to kick in for ObamaCare.
WhySoSiri
Just to be clear, this data started in '91. So...
Topcat123
I know right? I was amazed at how much it's dropped and that it's dropped nationwide.
DescipleOfCthulu
Yeah, especially since free contraception is now available nationwide. Strange coincidence. Also strange that places with abstinence (1/2)
DescipleOfCthulu
only education still have more teenage pregnancy than other places. It's like it doesn't work as well or something. (2/2)
Topcat123
I say promote both and let people pick which one is right for them. Knowledge is power and freedom to choose is wonderful.
DescipleOfCthulu
So teach normal sex ed. They can choose to abstain even when they know the facts about it. Knowing more about sex doesn't cause sex.
Snooj
Legit question: Are these statistics per capita? Because with Texas' population, it's likely to have more of anything than any other state.
MrJohnsonAndTheJuiceCrew
shhh, dont try to use your logic! just bash on texas like the rest of the hivemind!
damadamagoyolur
Convenient to blame disagreement on a hivemind. Stats used are pop%, the question is illogical.
RunsOnPizza
Everything's bigger in Texas.
booksandrubberbands
Texan here: Sad truth: even if it IS just because we're bigger, they DO really teach "abstinence only" and that has a huge effect. It's sad.
Trimbl
Bullshit. I'm Texan and I had sex ed three times before I turned 18.
booksandrubberbands
But was that se ed or "lets try to convince you not to ever have sex"? because that's what I got.

damadamagoyolur
True, but TX has 38% hispanic pop, CO 23%, not enough of a disparity to explain the large gap.
TheChinamanIsNotTheIssue
Are you talking about citizens? Texas has a shitload of non-citizen hispanics.
damadamagoyolur
They will not be counted with census birth statistics, and I'm sure CO has the same.
TheChinamanIsNotTheIssue
The parents will not be counted; their children will. That's the whole point. It skews the birthrate numbers.
mawleen
Are you serious? 38% of 26.45 mil is 10 mil. CO population is 5.3 mil. Hispanics double the CO pop, wtf disparity do you need?
damadamagoyolur
The large gap in percentages of teenage birth rates.... not total population.

AIComments
A percentage drop can only by equivalent to a per capita drop and a rate indicates per capita.
Snooj
Okay, the "rate" statistics weren't clear. I still feel like a lot of facts are missing.
AIComments
http://kff.org/other/state-indicator/teen-birth-rate-per-1000/
Snooj
That can't be right. It puts Maine down near the bottom. If I go elsewhere, I'll see even *more* teen pregnancy?
damadamagoyolur
Unless I'm missing sarcasm I think you might be reading the info wrong. Lower/bottom = less teen births. Top of list = more.
colacp
No, OP is mixing facts that aren't apples to apples.
AIComments
Its pretty simple, studies show that abstinence only sex ed leads to 50% higher birth rates than comprehensive sex ed. Additionally,
AIComments
easy access to reliable birth control reduces unintended pregnancies and abortion.
colacp
Texas isn't an abstinence only state. OP is spreading false information from the start.
Trimbl
Seriously I live in Texas and I took sex ed 3 different times!
