Waiting to be checked at the US customs when I see a man walk to the counter while chatting on his cell phone.

The customs officer yelled at him to put the phone away. He didn't want to cooperate. The officer started shouting like it was basic training. The guy decided to take a picture. He was immediately arrested and taken away.

I don't think their behaviour, or the security theater, are what I want of the world :/

Obviously cell phone guy is a decoy to draw attention away from incoming spy/assassin/panda/protagonist/smuggler.

8 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 2

A panda that kills spies and smuggles protagonists?

I'm glad you added protagonist to that list because I'm certainly not one.

Sir, what are you doing with that boat? Have you listed that boat on your declarations form? Sir, stop rocking that boat and look at me.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I mean getting arrested for that is a little extreme. Maybe escorted away and a stern talking to

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Right

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As an airline employee, this makes me happy. We make multiple announcements to not turn on or use your phone in immigration. No one listens.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Have to say, when I've gone through pre clearance in Dublin airport. That the US customs guys have generally been assholes.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 5

Same experience! Took a trip to germany in 2010 and the Irish and Germans were wicked nice, especially in comparison

U.S. Immigration are assholes. A buddy and I were coming back from the Stampede one day and they strip searched us. Why?!?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Never figured that one out. Immigration of any country are best not fucked with!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Why???

They really do overreact. What are they so worried about.

Salzburg is in Austria mate

Honest question, for the people that know; is going through customs that tough everywhere in the world or is it just the U.S?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Canada too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's just the US.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

The make it a point to make you feel like it's still the cold war.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Japanese customs inspection is like that too. I’ve had more issues coming into Japan than the US.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Canada gives me more problems than US. And I use the word problems loosely.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are you Canadian?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do they seem to be giving you problems because of any particular thing? I think my own delay rate driving into Canada has been about 1/60.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not really. To be fair I go a lot. I live only an hour from the border

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember my brother opening his case when we landed in Vegas and it was nicely folded. He hasn’t folded anything ever.

8 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 2

It's because no true terrorist would bother going through the normal security checkpoints...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Why would they need to? Bunch of people squeezed together in a nice tight spot, they just need to get to security, not through it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that might be because there are TSA agents there tbf

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

US is the only country I've seen with huge signs saying no phones. In UK, you can text etc no problems while on (long) lines.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

The two times I've flown to Dublin and back from Manchester, both airports had clear warnings not to use mobile phones at security.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I even had the privilege of overhearing one asian gentleman get a stern talking to for using his at Dublin while waiting for my gate.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s weird. I’ve never had any issue using my cell at JFK.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You can use it in an airport, you cant use them at immigration

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can be on your phone up until the customs agent calls you up in ewr. They’ve been pushing the mobile pass for customs (which is awesome)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have been severely yelled at for using my phone (not for calls) in 2011 and 2016.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

US customs is the best.

8 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 21

How dare customs detain a belligerent individual in what should be a secure area? It's almost like they're doing their jobs!

You know who else were doing there jobs? Thats right, Nazis

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

We’ve been burned before.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I don't blame them in this situation. Don't play cute games with customs. Doing so makes the whole experienced even shittier for everyone.

I had some tiny folding scissors confiscated by Dallas airport TSA.

8 years ago | Likes 965 Dislikes 41

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Authorities are stupid too, but it's best to avoid open confrontation.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Why the hell... Just hang out in the no mans land between customs and the airplane if you have to take the call.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I've seen many people working at the border who are power crazed, I'm genuinly scared every time I enter, and I have nothing to hide or fear

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Customs people are assholes quite frequently because they can get away with it.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

And their defense they have to deal with loads of people they are making wait in line. It’s not a healthy relationship for either side.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not saying it excuses their behavior but I can see why if you had to deal with 1000s or peeps a day you’d start being a little evil.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

True, but cashiers do it everyday. Difference is they are held accountable because their customer service makes the company money.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Going back from England to Iceland I saw a couple Germans hop over the rope and stroll right up to the booth in front of 100 people.

8 years ago | Likes 238 Dislikes 1

I did it too (US) in Iceland. People were anxious for a connecting flight & staff wasnt around so I wandered. Security is pretty laxed there

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Yeah but in my story we were still in England, it doesnt work like that there. In Iceland things were very easy.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey there were dozens of people just sleeping in Keflak airport like it was normal. I don’t think they give a shit as long as you give money

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Heathrow? Yea they're way more strict. Funny thing, they still have holes in their security, especially since they were expanding

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun Fact: It did not go their way.

8 years ago | Likes 307 Dislikes 0

The Germans are strangely terrible at waiting in lines in general. They'll patiently wait at pedestrian lights, but don't know how to queue.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Lmao! I would have loved to see that

8 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

I hear in the Pakistan/India you can slip somebody a little cash and move right through.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

but we're efficiently stupid!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't fuck with US customs. They actively try to deny you entry.

8 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 6

They didn't even scan my bags on re-entry last time I came back through customs in LA.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They did ask me if I'm from Kenya. I'm a blonde white guy from Finland, as it read in the passport he was reading.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Truth be told he was probably joking because as a border control agent he can say any damn thing he wants and I have to act serious.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Perhaps the US School system is lacking in basic geography?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Considering a gas station clerk in Phoenix looked at my passport and said "Finland! One of the first states!" you might be on to something.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

As an American, they always say "Welcome home." When they stamp my passport.

8 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 4

I love that.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an non-American they always make me wait in a queue for a couple of hours then try to infer I am visiting in order to steal US jobs

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My comments were directed more at non-Americans. Lots of Canadians her get lots of shit coming across the border, particular TN visa holders

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

signs that say not to do what?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Why can’t you go up to a customs officer talking on a phone?

8 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 5

Because the sign says not to.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

I assume because there's a ton of people also trying to get through and they want your full attention. Also it's rude af.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

Probably cause of bombs aswell

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Could someone please give a proper explanation? Like according to this and this law... Not this "they don't wanna" or "it's rude" shit.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You aren't supposed to have your phones out or any device capable of video/picture it is a security issue.

8 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 10

Do they realize we can make small, discreet cameras?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Security issue, my ass. It's so they can ban people recording them doing shady shit and calling them on it.

8 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 29

Like many places that require talking/interaction, phones are banned to speed up the process and increase communication bc it’s important

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Docs, dmv, any govt place - it’s because you need to be able to focus on what’s going on plus there are a million peeps bhind u at airports

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

If you take a photo of a border security officer they could be identified and attempted bribe.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 5

I don't think that fat border dude who asked me if I'm from Kenya (I'm a pasty white guy from Finland) was a secret agent.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wait, so then what about the show Border Security? You see their faces all the time

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

They're not exactly concealed agents.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I don't think that's it. I think it's because they don't want to deal with inattentive people jamming up the process.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Canadian border guard made me open my camera and expose the film because I took a pic of him searching my buddy's car.

8 years ago | Likes 916 Dislikes 3

I don't like getting my pictures taken either, especially while working. Many reasons why it's illegal to capture police and guards etc.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

IANAL, but he had no right to do that. What this does is basically prevent you from documenting abuses of power at the border, if they happn

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ACLU seems to agree that, at least when entering the US, this is illegal/ unconstitutional:

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do they deal with the cloud

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That would be illegal in Denmark (requiring you to destroy the picture that is).

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Not that that will stop them.

Relative of mine went to the DMZ, tour guides said they should take pics of NK guards across the border because it pisses them off.

8 years ago | Likes 537 Dislikes 5

Just very specific rules about when you can and cannot take pictures. We went last year, have plenty of pics from the DMZ towards NK.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everybody north korea know camera steal your soul

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 2

I went to the DMZ and cameras were banned

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

This was decades ago

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I went about 3 years ago. We had to leave cameras on the bus. Strict dress regulations too, no holes in jeans and stuff like that.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have plenty of pics I took on the NK side. I think your relative was lied to. I’ve heard lots of exaggerations about the dmz.

Please me more as I will be doing this this Saturday

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Lots of walking. Expensive gift shop. Good lunch. :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was many years ago so please pay attention to your guide.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sounds like a really roundabout way to commit suicide.

8 years ago | Likes 272 Dislikes 5

Why was this so god damned funny?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ehhh, you might get kidnaped if you stand too close to the line, but they don’t shoot you, that’s how world war three starts. Yeah

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Didn’t mean to say yeah, stupid fucking iPhone

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's so sassy, though. Yeah.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

isn't firing across the DMZ a violation of some UN rule or something?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The NK guards would taunt the American tourists, the tourists would snap photos in response.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

I mean I generally avoid pissing off armed people in authority, goes double for armed soldiers of despotic states, but you do you.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

A different time.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The NK soldiers have no authority in the DMZ, especially if they fire at an American...shit they'd be executed horribly within the hour

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I did it when I was a soldier there, there's nothing to be afraid of, armed or not.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Two things hpPen you either become the start of WW3 and become a memegod a fate worse rhen desth or nothing happens

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, they have approximately 37 cameras pointed at you, one with an objective lens so fhuge they can prolly read the S/N inside your camera.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Panmunjom is a weird tour, and you have to sign a waiver.

I mean, +1 for wanting a source; but this was a huge deal just a couple months back, so -1. I guess what I'm saying is: you get nothing.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 23

Not everyone can be on top of everything 24/7. He just wanted facts, which is good. Don’t take anything online at face value.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Part of becoming an adult is realizing that other people can know vastly different things and not know of things obvious to you.

They once pulled me into secondary for using my phone on the escalator down after clearing customs into baggage claim at Pearson. 1/

8 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 2

2/ Like, no, that's after the area where it's banned. Get a grip.

I'm not saying what they did was right but like... Did you piss them off beforehand somehow? Piss on their lunch maybe?

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

It was some random in baggage claim, not the one I talked to on the way through. And I didn't say anything unusual with that one.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pearson sucks so bad. A "security" agent made me throw away a 2inch nail file from my shaving kit. So #1 they "think" I'm going to kill ppl.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I only fly there for the YYZ luggage tags.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#2 If i was sodangerous with a 2" file. Just imagine what I could MacGyver with shit on the plane. So without the file im not a murderer?!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of the spike of one of those geometry compasses (circle, dividers?). Either a small metal pin or a smaller spike with handle....

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hah, when a buddy of mine took pictures of a cop breaking the law he swapped disposable cameras and the cop stomped the wrong one.

8 years ago | Likes 257 Dislikes 17

disposable cameras? exposing a roll film? are all these stories from 20 years ago?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yup, late 90s.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine is! 25, actually.

Don't be a power whore

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There was a US supreme court decision to the contrary. As soon as the plane touches the ground, you are subject to the constitution.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Citation needed. The constitution is a restriction on the federal government'. No regular person is "subject to it"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What happened to the cop?

probably nothing, nothing ever happens unless somebody throws money at it

8 years ago | Likes 136 Dislikes 13

Yeah I have no idea. Probably eventually fired for some other reason as this was LA in the 90s.
