Oh god I can only imagine. I've been to come nice zoos and even they make me sad. Animals should not be kept unless it is for conservation
My dogs are my best friends and I would never let them near a lion, crippled or not. Glad the risk payed off but makes me cringe a bit

But if the earth was flat, it would shrink with distance but you would still be able to see it with an eyeglass or something to magnify it.
As a kid I learned that our ancestors knew the earth was curved because as they watched ships over the horizon, they would disappear 1/2
