Halfway through the way of kings, it's a hard book to put down once you get into it.

This is what happened to me. I found it kinda boring after everyone going on about it.
I would second the Rimworld recommendation. I have a lot of hours in that game. Seems like it fits what you enjoy quite well.
While it's their choice, I could have to live with the mental scars of seeing their insides if they crash.

My sisters MIL posted on fb a picture of the baby before my sister had announced it and they weren't ready for visitors. She needed rules.
In NZ we have halls of residence which are generally just for first years. It's one room per person tho.

I hear you man, I did the same with my plates when it was an issue. Small fridge was not an option financially but a good idea if possible.
If the fridge is shared then you can't chuck a lock on it.

Cat-proof fences are a thing. I'm pretty sure they work alright.
