She probably spit on him. The only explanation for the sudden change of his behavior. I'm not an expert in US laws but I'm sure it's not legal. I can't say how would I react in this situation.
Given that the glass is tinted I doubt that. Glasswork (for chemistry etc.) usually requires a colorless glass. Oh, and the glass will be a fresh borosilicate, not the remelted bottles...
BTW, it was very common to use dung as fuel for cooking and heating. No chimneys or vents, just a hearth inside a hut or yourt. Imagine what it does to your lungs.
