If you already know you're going to love the series, start at the beginning, sure. If you're testing the waters, start anywhere else.
Pratchett's writing isn't matured in Colour, tonally or in format. It doesn't give you a good idea what to expect from the series.

But I will fight anyone who says Colour of Magic is a good starter for a newcomer.
Discworld has several arcs. Equal Rites, Mort, and Guards Guards are good starters, but /every/ book is a standalone, so jump right in.
Start at Colour for a reread, but I would never recommend a newcomer start there. Newcomers start with Guards! Guards! or Equal Rites, IMO.

But I'm hella biased. I love my hair short and will never ever go back. I've sacrificed boyfriends to keep it this way.
I'd encourage you to go for it anyway! Most men look fine with short hair, right? Most women look fine too.

I recently started work at a company that cares a lot about appearances, so I'm keeping my hair neat with pomade. I sort of hate it.
