Most criminal cases are "solved" by coercing the defendants into pleading guilty to literally anything, exploiting a knowledge imbalance and threats to bring exaggerated charges if it goes to trial. Regardless of whether the necessary elements were present there's no way they could have gotten a fair trial in California and their lawyer couldn't do more than try to minimize the damage. Since she managed to avoid a felony conviction and jail time, the lawyer probably did a fantastic job.
