Engine masters actually did an episode comparing different types of muffles. They measured sound and power for each kind.
They make high performance mufflers that you can see straight through and have baffles on the side. Kind of like how a gun suppressor works>
It'd be spinning over much faster if there was no compression. The starter wouldn't have any restrictions and could spin freely.

They don't. They are a lot heavier, and are unsprung weight(not supported by the suspension) unsprung weight matter so much more than sprung
