Where I grew up, kids used these for bombs. Not tiny bangs, but like 20-30-40 bundled together and taped up. Very loud. Very dangerous.

Not Alaska, but near to Kautokeino, Norway, 2007. It did not die there. It's placed there as a reminder for drivers to slow down.
