Archivist here, don't stack the books horizontally, it'll strain the spines extra and causing them to pull away from the gathered pages.
It's a fore edge painting! Book makers clamped them at that angle in a vise, using primarily ink and watercolors!
Cotton gloves cause more damage to rare books, and old parchment benefits from the oil in your fingers.
I went to high school with him. This is not surprising.

(2/2) and lost her garden. I made a tomato-shaped urn for her ashes, and resides next to her philosophy books. I think she would like that.
We cremated my mother when she died, but were unable to spread her ashes over a tomato plant, as she requested. We just moved she died (1/2)
