They ran the ~26 miles back to Athens to try to defend the other 1/2 of the Persian army that sailed to Athens.
That allowed the Athenians to know they had to go to marathon to face the Persians without the spartians help & then after the 3 hour battle
Another 2 days. Aka he ran 300 miles over ~5 days with a 6-12 hour break in the middle for food/sleep then died of exhaustion after.
So after going & reading the story is that he ran 150 miles from Athens to Sparta in about 2 days then delivered his message & returned in
