I feel like I enjoy the Saxon books for a lot of the same reasons I enjoy the Ender books.
Have you read the Ender's Game/Shadow series? It's sci-fi (and a pretty big name series), but if you haven't read it, you should.
I've read all of the Saxon books and have started working my way through the Sharpe series. Love them!
Alternatively, there weren't conventions to draw babies or (coming from Vox) Medieval artists were less interested in realism than we are.
