Trains had smoking hours for a long time, into the 2000s. Time periods during the day (several like 30 minute periods), and the entire overnight from like 10pm-6am, where you could smoke in the dining car. I took several overnight Amtrak rides during the late 90s and into the early 2000s to visit family and spent most of my riding time there.
And it's still what my old person brain says as 'not that long ago'. I distinctly recall visiting my dad in the hospital in 1992 and him taking us down the hall from his room to the smoking room the hospital had for patients & staff to smoke in.
