Smart bird is hunting over the feeder.

I'm guessing someone found a pile of feathers in their back yard and decided to look at the security footage.

We're lucky we're not on the menu

If that was my house as a kid I’d definitely jump the fence onto to trampoline to come home everyday

Nature be brutal like that.

Accipiters are UNBELIEVABLY nimble.

There is a small bird that lands on the feeder, and stays there. Is it hiding??

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

affectonately known as "The Sharpie." The Sharp-shinned Hawk is a small bird-hunting Accipiter... Famous for its in-flight kills (interceptor)

And probably still alive for a short time.

That's a Mutual of Omaha moment

Wow, that's digging back in the mental archives. "I'm sending Jim down to the kill site, to see if he can pry the pigeon from the deadly talons of the bird of prey, so we can analyze the hawk's technique."

Your Marlin Perkins imitation is spot on!

I lived in a desert town in NM for two years for work, had a decent backyard at my rental, put up a couple feeders. Had an insane amount of birds of all kinds. Including a variety of hawks and American kestrels. The birds of prey were making up to three kills a day that I could see. Eventually I realize I wasn't feeding the backyard birds; I was feeding the hawks.

Years ago, I had a red tailed hawk that would routinely stake out my bird feeder. Circle of life, baby.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's the circle of life!

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You were feeding both!

1 week ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

I eventually got a 42" planter saucer to use as a birdbath. The hawks loved it. They'd kill something, eat it, take a shit, take a bath, then leave.

1 week ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Eats, shits, and leaves!

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Are you saying they were not birds, in your backyard?

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not the birds that I set out to feed, no.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I acknowledge that part, but they were still birds in the backyard, having a meal lol

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean don't get me wrong, I thought it was awesome, I just had some concern they might get one of the cool/rarer birds that I was getting, like a cactus wren or a pyrrhuloxia.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've seen cactus wren, but desert cardinal, never seen one in person.

Cooper's hawks are my favorite Accipiter!

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a Sharpie, not a Coop / Coops are twice the size of Shap shinned but have the same feather patterns

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a Coop. It's larger than the pigeon. Sharps are the size of a blue Jay or kestrel and are smaller than pigeons.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lolz... a Cooper's wingspan is 36 inches... That's a Sharpie all day my friend

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually, after further review, you might be right (Oops never mind) sorry
