Problem is most of that surface area is still end grain. Any racking will break those joint pretty quickly.
Honestly? No advantage over something as simple as a mortise and tenon joint or even some dowels. Its all hidden anyways. Pride maybe?

Woodworker here, never use any type of vegetable or olive oil. The oil will go rancid in the wood. Use mineral oil or beeswax or mix them.
