Hmmm I disagree. The Balfour declaration of 1917 made it abundantly clear they wanted a Jewish state in Palestine. It was most likely a way to keep a subservient nation in the region so they could keep the suez canal clear for trade (which was the reason they worked with arab leaders to rebel against the ottomans in the first place). If they just left, they couldn't guarantee the suez. Otherwise they have to travel the horn of Africa. Much worse for trade/resupply.
