As someone with aphantasia, I always thought that 'picture it in your mind' was figurative language. I was in my late 30's when I first heard of aphantasia. Although I may not be able to visualize images in my head, I can conceptualize ideas very well. Abstract thought is also kind of a strongpoint. I'm a strong visual/hands-on learner and I'm fairly artistic. Things just play out on a canvas or sketchbook rather than my mind.
