Oh yes. It's not easy, but there are other punishments than violence. Beating your kid's an easy way, but a lazy and possibly damaging way.

Likely a Komondor, a Hungarian livestock guarding breed. Tough dogs.
It's a warm and protective coat on some sheep/cattle guarding breeds. They are bred white so the herder won't shoot them accidentally.
