Cognitively, wolves and dogs are extremely different, actually. Intelligence isn't linear; it's fluid. Dogs can do MANY things wolves can't.

This is why I have border collies - they are incredibly intuitive, loyal and committed to their jobs.
I had to put down the best dog I ever had after 15 years a month ago. Being there doesn't make it hurt any less. I'm sorry for your loss :(
