Another theory I have seen/heard is that when the old ones left the galaxy to flee the enslavers, they found a new galaxy to hide in that was hostile, and have evolved to become the tyranids as many of their greatest were killed off. Both races are able to mold genetics practically on a whim, are fantasticlly powerful in the warp, and the Silent King began the great awakening when he detected the hive fleets approach.
Just the fact you take that stance tells me that the wording of the headline affected the way you think.
