Where in there did I say millennials? So now you want to put words in my mouth to support your argument? You're right. It's not our responsibility to make the site profitable... But it IS our responsibility to not act like a troop of bumbling raving baboons while we're here. And from what I've seen of the last few days, too many users are not living up to that simple standard.
If you think this is a hissy fit, compared to what's been going on with the site in the last few days, you are far less observant than I originally gave you credit for.
Do you think it spontaneously generates profit? That this site runs for free? That there's no upkeep to the amount of traffic that the thousands of people who run through it every day? That's not how this works. And if you make the site unusable enough, what little profit ML gets from it now is going to dry up and they will just shutter it for good and cut their loses. This is NOT the way.
Sara isn't here any more and hasn't been for a while. That's one of the multitude of reasons the site started going into the toilet. You can't look for Sara to be some great savior of the site. It's not going to happen. And I'd rather see the site continue to live than die from people having a hissy fit of the state of things.
Yeah, no .... That might be t rue in some cases, sure, but a site like imgur can cost anywhere from thousands to tens of thousands of dollars to run every month. A handful of people clicking on ads isn't going to make them the money they need. And if those few clicks that DO earn them the money go away, do you think they're just going to keep pumping money endlessly into a site that doesn't earn anything back? That's what all those community events are about... trying to force more ads on people
I do understand. I've been a part of REAL protests in the REAL world. Not this digital mockery you're making of it. It WAS a protest. Now you're just having a temper tantrum. What started as a protest has essentially turned into a riot.
That costs MONEY. And if you think a big corporation can't make it profitable, what makes you think a single person or a handful of casual users will be able to? Do you know how much it costs to run a site like imgur with as much traffic as it gets?
So you're just admitting that your point is to kill imgur. So you are just proving exactly what I've been saying.
That's not how business works. If you put money into something and it does nothing but hemorrhage more money, you don't keep pumping funds into it trying to fix it. You amputate and cut your loses.
The site is effectively unusable for most normal browsers. Lurkers are fine because they sit in the shit pile in usersub anyways, sifting through for the good posts. But where the majority of casual users sit is on the front page. You're only driving down traffic which is going to do nothing but make ML view the site as unprofitable and shutter it for good.
Not at first, but that is what it has devolved into.
Then you're proving my point. You aren't hurting MediaLab you're hurting your fellow imgurians.
It doesn't matter what you post. It isn't going to do shit to them. Not to a big faceless pump and dump company like media lab. This is not going to end in any way that is beneficial for the site if this keeps up
No, it wasn't about the notifications. But they fixed them, and now what? We're just going to keep protesting until they decide the site isn't worth saving any more because the users have become chaotic and unruly?
No they didn't listen. But if you think shoving boobs on the front page is going to make them listen, you're hilariously ill informed.
And what about all the people who depend on this site for that small glimmer of sanity in the current world we live in?
Nothing WILL be achieved like this. The outcomes of the way things are going are either MediaLab gives up and shutters the site completely, or the users give up and let things go back to normal. This isn't going to achieve anything that so many people think it will
And then what? Are YOU going to pay the bills for it? Who do you think is going to run things if they sell it off? Who's going to BUY it if this is how the site looks? You just don't get it.
How about the fact that I was there when the notifications broke? I was a part of the initial protests of how things have been handled. But now, the site is just being overrun by people who want nothing more than to be disruptive. Not for the purpose of "fixing" things, but just for the purpose of spreading chaos
That's been done. Now all you're achieving is driving away what few users remain. Congratulations. You've "saved" the site and are now killing it
You have woefully high hopes for what MediaLab will do with this situation. If you make the site useless they will just get rid of it. And what, if as so many people have suggested, they DO give it to the community? Are YOU going to pay the bills to keep it going?
To kill the thing you're protesting in favor of? No it isn't.
So the point is to kill the site? I don't think you understand what the protest is for then.
