These "protests" are making the site less usable than anything MediaLab has fucked up

Aug 29, 2025 1:59 PM

Throwaway account for obvious reasons

I supported the protests in the beginning. Things were broken, needed to be fixed, and there has been some progress made there. And yet, day after day, people are still going out of their way to disrupt the site. This is causing more of an issue for the users than anything MediaLab has done.

For people claiming to want to "save" the site, these protests are going to drive away what few users are left. Whatever misguided attempts are being made to save the site are now what's killing it and driving away users.

If you make the site unusable and unprofitable enough, MediaLab will just close it.... Not "give it to the community." Stop trying to kill Imgur.

If a protest doesn't cause disruption, it's meaningless.

Yeah, I'm sad because imgur was my go-to during my work commute and now I'm scared to open it in public,, lol.

God forbid you say something like that, the pervy lynchmob will tell you you're a lonely loser if you prefer normality.

I just don't need to get on another list, lmao, lotta school children on this particular bus route, aha.

So the point is to kill the site? I don't think you understand what the protest is for then.

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

So what are you using as a source to determine what the protest is for?

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How about the fact that I was there when the notifications broke? I was a part of the initial protests of how things have been handled. But now, the site is just being overrun by people who want nothing more than to be disruptive. Not for the purpose of "fixing" things, but just for the purpose of spreading chaos

It was never just about "fix the notifications": /gallery/grievances-indictment-SGiEwIE

No, it wasn't about the notifications. But they fixed them, and now what? We're just going to keep protesting until they decide the site isn't worth saving any more because the users have become chaotic and unruly?

Kill it till Medialab is forced to sell, or bring back its old imgur team

You have woefully high hopes for what MediaLab will do with this situation. If you make the site useless they will just get rid of it. And what, if as so many people have suggested, they DO give it to the community? Are YOU going to pay the bills to keep it going?

And then what? Are YOU going to pay the bills for it? Who do you think is going to run things if they sell it off? Who's going to BUY it if this is how the site looks? You just don't get it.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

That's the point of a protest.

7 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

To kill the thing you're protesting in favor of? No it isn't.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

No, to disrupt the status quo and not accept fake apologies.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Throwing a temper tantrum like a child, this is what this "protest" is.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Not at first, but that is what it has devolved into.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

That's been done. Now all you're achieving is driving away what few users remain. Congratulations. You've "saved" the site and are now killing it

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

It's far from saved. Medialab is still in charge and once the protest dies down it'll just go back to them adding more enshitification to Imgur. Nothing has been achieved yet. We're in the middle of it.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nothing WILL be achieved like this. The outcomes of the way things are going are either MediaLab gives up and shutters the site completely, or the users give up and let things go back to normal. This isn't going to achieve anything that so many people think it will

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That is the point for a lot of people. They don't want to see imgur remain a bloated zombie corpse while it's killer profits from the preceding decade+ of community work. Instead, blow it up entirely to send a message about the perils of enshittification.

And what about all the people who depend on this site for that small glimmer of sanity in the current world we live in?

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Demand better from its owners. You're asking people in a picket line striking outside of a business to take pity on the customers.

Do you think imgur spontaneously generates its content? Do you imagine that those posting in protest otherwise never contribute? If the content creators and user sub filterers of imgur were against this, then the site would look just as it always does.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you think it spontaneously generates profit? That this site runs for free? That there's no upkeep to the amount of traffic that the thousands of people who run through it every day? That's not how this works. And if you make the site unusable enough, what little profit ML gets from it now is going to dry up and they will just shutter it for good and cut their loses. This is NOT the way.

"Millenials are killing the imgur business" It's not the responsibility of the users to make the site profitable. That is entirely on their end. Previous management did so for over a decade, and through community outreach quelled the mobs and ensured complaints were addressed.

The current owners have decided to dump all that in favor of profits. That's their prerogative, but it doesn't mean we have any obligation to continue supporting the site.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where in there did I say millennials? So now you want to put words in my mouth to support your argument? You're right. It's not our responsibility to make the site profitable... But it IS our responsibility to not act like a troop of bumbling raving baboons while we're here. And from what I've seen of the last few days, too many users are not living up to that simple standard.

Existing posts, tags, etc still exist. They can click on that stuff. Or browse random.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The site is effectively unusable for most normal browsers. Lurkers are fine because they sit in the shit pile in usersub anyways, sifting through for the good posts. But where the majority of casual users sit is on the front page. You're only driving down traffic which is going to do nothing but make ML view the site as unprofitable and shutter it for good.

Good. Then we can replace it with something better. /gallery/let-me-show-you-what-ive-been-working-on-jZT6KLs

So you're just admitting that your point is to kill imgur. So you are just proving exactly what I've been saying.
