Actually a lot of insects and mollusk do the same thing. Snails have things called love spikes. It's exactly what you think it is.

As a Californian who always seems to get stuck in traffic underneath the overpasses, this is my biggest fear
Exhaling quickly tightens your core and gives a slight strength advantage. Vocalizing is a way to slow down the exhale and sustain it more.
Lived in SoCal my whole life and yeah. Our water is murky af.
