For me, "queer" has a strong "for us, not for you" context to it. I'd probably bristle if someone outside the community used it to describe me, but it was also used as a slur against me when I was growing up, and that's considering I use it as a shorthand for myself. There are also a large number of people who are LGBTQIA+ who don't consider themselves queer or even like the term, so I'd recommend just not using it.
