The debt ceiling is being reached. If you tax the rich more, then you're punishing people who pay the most tax, maybe chasing them away, reducing investments, weakening the dollar. The $ trillion trade balance deficit, if resolved is enough to begin paying back debt but that's not the goal yet. It's simply to maintain the debt. About 400 billion per year. Everyone has the power to research where the items they buy are made. You cannot keep giving money to other countries.

Off at a tangent. The UK version of the saying "gimme a break" or similiar phrases, when questioned too much, in 1960s was "Oof, I didn't expect the Spanish inquisition." So over-used, like "living the dream" that Monty Python satirized it into them appearing and saying "noone" expects the Spanish inquistion. Either or. Good fun.
