We're likely just used to seeing people age very poorly. People born in the 1950-1960s had two major trends which severely impacted their physical aging: they smoked a lot more and used way less sunscreen. So our baseline for what a 55 year old may have looked like in the 2000s-2010s would statistically be way worse than someone born in the 1970s-1980s who is turning 55 now/soon.
