There is not an almost monopoly whatsoever. Ever heard of Google fiber? They'll be pushing a lot more companies to become more efficient.
But if you really want to talk about the economics of it, than I believe this will drive prices down. Look no further than phone providers..

I'm not trying to prove the negative. Everyone else is by saying "things won't be the same!!" therefore the burden of proof is on them (1/2)
It hinders innovation a better services for consumers.
And when it's not a monopoly there will always be a competitor to challenge prices thereby lowering them. When government gets in the way..
