You're right, I don't know this person just found out they exist 2 minutes ago. But I'm still glad they are here (resonate with the story and the journey) and I am glad you are too. I can see why you'd think that's shallow/superficial like a placeholder meaningless phrase but I'm honest.

Okay but OP doesn't suggest his/her mom was a toxic individual that you need to go no contact with, I think that's a different situation. In this case the mom is elderly and unable to accept the reality which makes it difficult for everyone involved. As some suggested, finding something that could give her a sense of purpose might help.
