I thought the Orca was going to leap right inuit

Orcas are smart. And communicative. And they are sooo done with our shit.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 5

Fuck. That.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Hope this helps.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For decades now whenever someone has said "There have never been any attacks by orcas on man in the wild" . I ALWAYS replied with "No known orca attacks, plenty of missing people though" .

Why is he stopping! O.o

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They didn't stop. It's edited poorly, and then mirrored with the actual event happening about 12 seconds in. The first 12 seconds is a "sweet spot" grab to get you to watch the whole thing and/or for longer from whatever platform this was taken from.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oooh that's right, I see it now! It's clipped, didn't pay attention the first time, thanks :D

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So are we still rooting for the orcas to normalize attacking small boats that most likely isn't owned by the rich?

they're faster than you think.

2 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 1

no they aren't, but that's mostly down to the fact that most boats are slower than I think.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My thoughts exaclty. If the orca really wanted to, it could have easily reeled the inuit boat in.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

maybe...but would you want to bite into something that has a full speed, open blade blender attached? Motorboats are pretty violent on the aft end.

/s

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Is it tho? I have zero fear of orcas, cause i do this neat little thing called staying tf out of orcas house. Im also not scared of bears or sharks or lions for the exact same reason.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 8

Sure, but empathy? I see people in a small boat being attacked by a whale, and I can insert myself and feel a facsimile of their fear by proxy. I am not afraid of orcas, but I can, through the conduit of this video, imagine how frightened I would be in that situation.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I mean... Im just of the mindset that its nature. Incas have hunt the whales for 1000s of years, the whales sometimes hunt the incas right back. Im sure its scary for them, but i dont feel more empathy for the humans' fear than i do for the whales' fear. Humans aint special. When it comes to Man v. Nature, im rooting for nature every time.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

🤖 I do not empathize with other humans. 🤖 I see humans in danger objectively. 🤖 I am impervious to the idea of large animals as dangerous monsters in moments of danger. 🤖 I do not understand how people are moved by movies.

Is all this kind of stuff a normal(ish) occurrence we just hear about now because of social media and the like? Or is this because we've properly fucked the ocean and things are starting to go tits up?

2 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

So Orcas messing with smaller boats was always a thing. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orca_attacks
BUT: while modern technology may help in documenting that behavior, The Orca attacks on the iberian coast are very new. They i.e. purposefully attacked the rudder. So you seem to have Orcas that attack boats regularly. And they seem to share the methods between groups.

Since 2020 there have been over 500 Orca attacks with multiple sunken vessels.
Speculations are wild.

2 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

Anyone get eaten?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only rudders.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Orcas are smart as fuck. Here in Washington in the 80s I believe, one Orca started wearing a dead salmon on its head like a hat. Within weeks, all the other Orcas in the pod were also seen wearing dead salmon on their heads. One whale started a fucking fashion fad and it spread. It's wild.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did they have fish or seal meat in boat?

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

There's meat in there, alright. That apex predator does not give a shit about someone's "personhood". They dont kill you either because they have something else they prefer to eat, or because you havnt pissed them off too much. Either are subject to change.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it's mostly there's food around and I not sharing, so piss off human

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Looks to me like they are dropping gill nets into the water - large pink buoys - whales have a hard time detecting them and get tangled and drown. Plus the nets vacuum up all the fish in the area.

Those are young and small. But more importantly, not hungry and in a good mood.

2 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 3

Yeah this was playful and curious behavior. No sign of aggression but being hungry wouldn’t make them eat or attack a boat either.

I first figured that 'what an idiot, thinking they're friendly' and then realised he could do fuck all, if the were not. I would react the same. They are beautiful and you can only enjoy the moment. ...and maybe not swim.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

In those sorts of situations, it's best to remain calm. If you start to panic it'll only make things worse (and potentially make you look like a more appetizing treat). Best you can do is carry on and hope that's enough to not draw any attention.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My response to that situation would have involved a lot more terrified screaming

2 years ago | Likes 118 Dislikes 2

Acting like prey is the best way to be prey. Want to stay alive, make sure that animal doesn't think you're afraid they'll notice they can eat you. Animals don't want to be injured and will avoid the unknown if you're weird enough or calm enough. I would feel blessed being visited by orcas, if they wanted to eat you they'd slam you off the paddle board before you saw them.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'd be wearing my brown pants.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Ironically their response would be to eat you to make you stop.

2 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Has there ever been an orca attack to a swimming human?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Like 5 fatal ones, as mentioned, all in captivity. They could leave no witnesses in the wild, though...

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So far only in captivity. But this could also potentially be from orcas not leaving survivors behind in the wild so we may never actually know.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Seems like word has gone out worldwide amongst the orcas. Boats beware.

2 years ago | Likes 542 Dislikes 2

That orca had a real vendetta. I wonder if it was a territorial thing.

2 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 0

I for one welcome our new Orca overlords.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

That's what I was thinking

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Seems like with the ice melting and all, their hunting territory has expanded. They are pretty good at killing anything in their waters.

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

I used to mention that orcas aren't just attacking rich yachts, they are attacking everyone. Maybe now people will stop cheering for orca attacks.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 4

predators attacking other potential predators in their territory is just nature. humans are accelerating the change and for many animals the destruction of habitat, hunting, and spawning grounds, so again, only natural they should be aggressive. My only concern is if people start hunting them down again to slow the attacks

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm still gonna cheer I don't fuck with the ocean. After all the plastic it kinda seems fair at this point. And hey shark party

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

The Inuit are traditionally whalers. I would fight back if someone wanted to eat me or my friends too. I see no problem here.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Who in their right mind would attempt to hunt an orca

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No one I know. But I don’t know how advanced orcas thoughts are. It’s entirely possible they are attacking on behalf of their wright whale cousins.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, team orca. We've been fucking up their world, their defense is justified

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

While I'm sure others have realized this. I'll still cheer for the orcas specifically when targeting the rich. Fuck them yachts up. For the rest of the normie humans, nah just be safe lol. Thats some shit you dont want or need.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Except it wasn't rich people's yachts getting messed up, unless you think that every sailboat is a rich person's yacht?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Nope it was Inuit whalers

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The book (and series) that has this as a starting plot is called "The Swarm"... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Swarm_(TV_series)

*Orcas attack yachts* Idiots: Yay, eat the rich! Me: You idiots realize it's not going to stop there? Idiots: You're upholding the patriarchy! *Orcas attack other boats* Idiots: But why don't they eat the rich?! Me: Because they're animals, you goddamn idiots. They don't have a concept of 'rich' or 'poor'.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 15

They target boats by sound, so they attack the same kind of boat that caused them grievance. And it wasn't the type of yachts people imagine

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

A yacht is a sailboat. The yachts they targeted around Portugal were all travelling under sail. The yachts weren't making noise. If it was just a noise thing, little fishing boats like this would probably be the first targets.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Sound - not noise. Even sailboats makes distinctive sounds when traveling, especially under water. And yachts aren't only sailboats.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But there are a lot of assholes among the rich, aren't there? And that's exactly what the orcas smell… v

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 8

Idiot.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah, I'm sure these terrified fishermen in this aluminum john boat are complete assholes. /s

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

well I'm sure they're smelling something from a different kind of asshole...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

The mental gymnastics to avoid having to care about other people is just astonishing. I'd avoid getting on a boat if I were you.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

lol, it was a joke about how the fishermen were shitting their pants

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

applies to humans too tbh. When violence comes, there's no "rich" and "poor". Only "us" and "them".

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Look, I'm sure if we just ignore enough history, everything will work out fine. Isn't that right, Robespierre? …Robespierre? Now where'd he head off to?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How is rich and poor not an us and them?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oh if only it were that simple...just look at how the French, Russian, and Chinese Cultural Revolutions saw people twisting those definitions to their own benefit. There is no idealism in violence. Only power.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When it comes to politics and such morality goes to the wayside, in those instances its all about power and getting more of it. Those cultures of the past were all very nationalistic to begin with I don't think that shows that rich vs poor couldn't be the us vs them especially in a much more culturally diverse region.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The point is when violence breaks out, people turn out to be quite flexible on who's "rich" and who's "poor". It only matters who gets you more power and who you can use your power on. It's a civil war. That's just politics with weapons.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I prefer when they go after yachts but I side with the Orcas

2 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 8

Being a bit of monster.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Most of the yachts are in price and capacity of a regular camper (2-6 ppl, sleeping in very narrow places). The yacht from poland that orcs had sunken last year was something like that - not necessity, but nothing fancy and certainly not luxurious. Way cheaper than sleeping in hotels.
I know this because my dad used to have a yacht, and it was even smaller than modern cheap yachts. Celebrating loses like this is like celebrating mindless destruction of campers, it's vile.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You realize these people were probably just subsistence fishing right?

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 10

That's a nice way to say 'whaling', in the context of 'aboriginal subsistence fishing'. I can't really blame the orcas for deciding it's their turn. That is a tradition that needs to be put to an end, whether it takes subsidies or infrastructure for other supplies.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

So are the orcas

2 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 6

Orcas do a lot of things for fun actually, really not necessarily true.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hence “I prefer when they go for yachts”

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 10

"but I side with the orcas"

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 9

We are taking and taking from the ocean and are being surprised when it fights back? Humanity has made this problem and now are lying in our beds.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

People are idiots.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A yacht is just another word for sailboat. If you think only rich people have sailboats, you've never lived on the coast. For a lot of people it's one step above living in your car.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

In my mind a yacht is a huge personal motorboat with multiple bedrooms and such. Not a sailboat

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 8

Apparently I'm ignorant about a lot of yacht-related things 🙃

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The dictionary says it's a medium sized sailboat designed for racing or cruising. Your opinion doesn't really effect that.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Then you have no idea what the orcas were actually attacking this whole time. They are not vigilantes fighting against the capitalist oppressors. They have been attacking mainly small sailboats.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Then you have completely unrealistic picture of the problem. In practice, any sailboat with a cabin can be called a yacht, and it's the small ones that suffer the most from orca attacks. Billionaire super-yachts are invaluable to orcas, so the whole "ha, ha, orcas eat the rich" thing seems really dumb to me.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

And if we were all in your mind, that would be a valid opinion.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That is not the modern definition of a yacht.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

It is

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It literally isn't. The modern definition includes power boats.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope. You had an incorrect definition. It's a weirdly specific term for something you probably don't do and/or have no interest in. Why should you have known exactly what a yacht is? It never mattered before. Now, you are faced with new information and you can either say: Oh, really? I didn't know that. I guess I learned something today. Or you can fold your arms, stick out your lower lip and yell: NUH-UH!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Oxford also has the newer CORRECT definition that included powered pleasure vessels.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No you have an incorrect definition. That may have been the definition originally but definitions change. Yacht now means both sailing and powered vessels.

You can check Merriam Webster if you want some kind of "offical" sign off but that isn't necessary imo for a definition to change.
