This is called "freedom camping" in NZ, and a major tourism industry pre-covid. Some areas were marked for no camping, but they're small.
It lends a certain taste to absolutely everything it's in. We know it as the American "fake" taste.

I listen to our locals on the scanner. Made me appreciate them way more. Mostly good humoured, and surprisingly busy. (NZ)
