I had no idea this existed! Thank you, kind internet stranger!

Oh! I wasn't disagreeing with your broader comparison to the Torah at all. I think it's spot on. I was just saying that I think the Ainulindalë in particular corresponds very closely to the creation account in Genesis, which Tolkien himself would have considered and engaged with as a "Christian" work, despite it having been appropriated from Judaism.

But also, having grown up immersed in Abrahamic theological discourse, I just have more fun trying to connect things to other mythologies!

Lol yeah, just a light read

Lol, yeah the Hobbit it is not. But I don't believe it's actually harder to read, if you know what to expect. The thing about epic poems and sagas is that they're meant to be memorized and recited orally to an audience of people who have heard the story many times, as well as totally new listeners. So you're not expected to fully grasp everything at first; it all makes more sense as you go along, gathering context and seeing the themes emerge

It's important to make a distinction between "private property," which is the means of production, including factories, infrastructure, land, and other natural resources and "personal property," which are a person's possessions. No reasonable person takes issue with ownership of personal property, but private property generates capital for the owner while depriving workers of the value of their labour.

It absolutely fits the definition of an epic, but I misspoke when I said "poem," and "saga" is a better word choice. Indeed, the earlier version that appears in The Book of Lost Tales is even more clearly based on Norse mythology! But Tolkien was a devout Catholic and successive revisions of the story increasingly paralleled Christian mythology, and I do agree that the Ainulindalë in the Silmarillion in particular does read very, very much like Genesis

If you do, go into it knowing that it's written in the style of an epic poem, not a novel like LotR. Don't to try to remember all of the million names that get thrown at you; the important ones will be repeated enough that you'll recognize them by the time they're narratively important.

Also, when you get to Of Beleriand and Its Realms, do yourself a favor and consult a map!

#28 holy FUCK, @OP! 😱😱😱
I've had bad roommates, but that manipulative dirt bag sounds like an entirely different level of nightmare! I'm glad you and your family are finally rid of that abusive loser and I hope you have regained your peace!

Fair point! But my searching has not turned up a primary source for the quote and I haven't been able to identify the named "Milton scholars," so I'm unsure if the exchange actually occurred. But! I do maintain that anyone flipping tables over differing interpretations of a centuries-old poem about a millenia-old myth is being a silly bitch

Why would anyone, including you, waste that effort? Your mom is a fascist coward and as much of a lost cause as your father.

If they're still MAGA cultists at this point, no amount of shame will impact them.

I am entranced by your work's surreal, haunting aesthetic 😯

If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to hear a bit about your process. Do you do everything in 3D, or do you use separate 2D tools to paint on top of a shot of the render? (sorry if my terminology is off; I hope it's clear what I'm asking)

Fuck, I'm so sorry. I'm a chef, and while I've had illnesses that came much closer to killing me, none of them ever sapped my will to live quite as much as when I got COVID in 2023 and I lost my senses of taste and smell. I cried every day until they slowly began to return after more than a month

One of mine unaccountably smells faintly of old lady perfume and has since she was a teensy kitten. It's not even close to the strangest thing about her
