As an addiction psychiatrist, I thibk any single explanation for a substance use disorder is insufficient to explain the breadth of reasons and factors that cause people to use and continue using. If you're looking for clear evidence that it is more complicated, look up the studies on alcoholic vervet monkies in St. Kitts and Nevis. The BBC video on it is a great summary (and pretty entertaining).
