Try an interactive map. Early on give them an incomplete one (maybe an NPC), with some notes and let them fill it out as they travel.

I have found that players take such maps for granted, like GPS in computer games. Lack of maps, legends and rumors encourage exploration

Controversial opinion: don't ever show or give the map to your players. Unless there exist an exact map in the game world, use treasure maps
