A low income utilities program that keeps people from freezing to death in their homes, keeps their meagre groceries from spoiling, keeps their medical devices operating, and keeps the lights on so their children can do their homework? In one case, the scammers go to jail. In the other, the tech leaders who created the infrastructure and failed to install safeguards go to jail. They can’t be trusted to self-regulate while they have a profit incentive and a legal obligation to maximize returns to their shareholders. Government regulation is the safeguard that protects us from their pursuit of profit at the expense of our freedom. New laws that regulate the actions of individuals? Maybe not. Laws that regulate corps? Rad.
