So in my eyes, Its not really about absolving sin, but just that the idea of the strong/superior controlling the weak/inferior makes sense to these weirdos. They WANT to control the weak. And who is weaker than a child?
My theory is different - there's 2 ways to view humans - as inherently equal OR as inherently unequal. Right wingers and the religious always view people as inherently unequal. There's always a leader to worship in both cases. In their eyes, some people are worth more, and some less. The ones that are worth less are owned by those that are worth more. Wives are owned by husbands, children are owned by adults. Simple put, if you're RW or religious, you're more likely to see children as objects.
