Hey Imgur,
Some may have seen my previous post (Single line spiral drawing: http://imgur.com/gallery/qv1xc ).
I program a plotter to draw illustrations in different styles with a pen. I promised to make a video as soon as I get a new plotter, so here it is. The video is fast forward at about 60 times the original speed and shows how the above Chaplin drawing was made. The whole drawing process takes about two hours so you only see the middle part. The reason for that is simply that my camera does not have enough memory storage to record everything.

Bonus, the drawing process of my spiral style.

This is a drawing of The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai. This drawing is made on Aquarelle paper of A3 format and I used a Japanese Bruch pen for this. Because the pen is quite delicate it has to be moved very slowly. It took about 8 hours to finish this drawing. I made this drawing for a fellow Imgurian who ordered it at my shop, he was an awesome customer. Cheers to you Maarten!

The Great wave from a different angle.

The same motive of The Great Wave off Kanagawa only scaled down to 7 cm (2.7 inch). Scaled down the drawings have a lot more contrast.

This is a panda, again the drawing is about 7 cm in diameter.

Some images from my previous post:
This is a portrait of Ryan Gosling.

A portrait of Emma Stone. The single line starts in the middle and moves to the outer parts in a spiral.

All three drawings together.

Shit, I was impressed thinking it was done by hand till I realised it was done by a fancy dot matrix printer

I feel like "art" made by a program is less "art" & more "Product". You dont look at a toothbrush & think "Woah, such creativity & design!"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

ok, but how is it done?

It would be cool to make a portrait of someone using their heart beats (ecg).

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Funny that you say this. I working on something that makes the portrait from the sound eaves of a recording.

Also did some drawings with my plotter a while back >> v

That's pretty cool! Do you threshold the image first and apply Potrace, and then hatch the rest? It is a very nice style!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The basic image is done using gaussian difference to get the outlines and the filled areas, then the hatching is done from a thresholded >>

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

area. Then into PoTrace to get the outlines and Clipper to process the actual plot. : )

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is very nice. I have a style with similar hatching. Where the lines are not totally straight. But your result feels more natural.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually tried a hatch pattern that I did with a pen, but the plotter kept struggling with the lines. > . <

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hmmm was hoping they were done by hand since they are labeled as Drawings

8 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 5

Yeah, that was my first thought... like, holy fuck how did someone do that. But still, I'm reasonably impressed with the printing too.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

And the pens sitting next to the pictures

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 1

This is just the pen used to draw the images. But I am sorry if I have not made the post clear.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

No worries still cool, and good work!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ya its totally misleading to call them Drawings and have a pen sitting next to the final products when a plotter is doing the work

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Well they are drawn with the pen. But I will try to be clearer in the future

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also have trouble believing you drew anything since your "drawing" is the first photo that shows up when you Google "Emma Stone portrait"
