I have no musical talent, but I'm learning the guitar to be a better father.

I have no musical talent, but I take guitar lessons with my 13 year old. He loves being better than his dad and teases me for how slow a learner I am.

But for the last two years, I've had an excuse to spend 30 minutes every day with him picking, noodling, performing random acts of violence against various scales, and talking.

Wouldn't trade it for the world.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your words of support and advice. This is something I'd recommend to any parent: Let your kids see you suck; let them see that even you have to practice and work hard to get better.

My dad was a metalworker. He made all kinds of things for me but never spent time with me. I'd rather have had the time than the things.

Make sure to teach him "Cat's in the Cradle" when you can.

I was going to suggest learn "Cat's in the Cradle" on his own and then surprise his son with it.

I had a similar experience doing taekwondo with my son. I'm out of shape and uncoordinated but it was a great bonding experience.

I got teased for living in a Minecraft dirt hole in the ground. , started playing with my kids to bond as well

You’re doing it right.

That’s so beautiful to read.

Learn how to play “old man” by Neil Young. I think that would be ironic.

The teasing is pretty good for his confidence too. This is good dad work, you seem like a good dad

I've had my guitar 23 years. Can't play it for shit. I'm holding onto it now so my son has a chance to learn and be better than his old man.

Or my daughter, got that matter. Same goes for the 13 year old violin.... And the 8 year old bass... I collect instruments...?

Your absolutely nailing it @op time with your son? Encouraging and supportive? You keep that shit up!

Try learning the money for nothing riff, even as someone who likes finger picking it is difficult to wrap head around.

Dad Level 100 Unlocked! Do what they love and you have a key into them. Good on ya @op !

He'll look back on it probably quite fondly later in his life too for the quality time & fun you had together.

One can only hope so.

At some level he'll just know that dad loves him and valued being with him. Understanding how will only be important as he becomes a dad.

"Cats in the cradle...."

I used to think that song was lame because the melody sucked, but now I appreciate the hell outa it.

It was probably 27 years before my dad admitted I was better than him at something, and even then, it was cautiously said.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, eventually he'll figure it out and it'll be a guy punch

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

gut punch, but yeah

I'm already a bad guitarist, looking to adopt.

Just have to hand him his ass in something you're good in. Like Mario kart, fixing stuff or banging his mom's sister
