Most viral edit: Thanks for the upvotes, despite my boneheaded mistake in the original post. I found an article that talks in depth about why the numbers are down and doesn’t blame the “youths”. This LA times write up does a decent job to breaking down the tourism numbers and the importance of CA to Vegas.

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-08-04/vegas-tourism-is-slumping-are-californians-staying-home

Spoiler alert, Vegas is screwed because of a combination of self inflicted injuries (everything is expensive AF) and overall drop in domestic and international tourism.

It is low key kinda funny that Discharge is fucking up another city that’s full of hotels and casinos LMAO. Maybe this was his long term revenge plan for Atlantic City.

I’m going to bed, enough Imgur for today. Stay fresh, cheese baggs

Original post:
Pretty sure people are skipping Vegas because no one feels safe traveling to America where ICE is prowling the streets and, Discharge is in the office again. First time was a fluke, now it’s a pattern.

People are also skipping Vegas because every company is scrambling to assess the impacts from tariffs and how they are going to source material once they hit certain countries.

Idk what NYP is on about, but I’m sure they gotta blame someone and why not the youths!

I'm not young. I don't go to Vegas because I don't have money.

Or you know, sports betting apps. Gambling used to be relegated to Indian casinos, Atlantic city, and Vegas. Now you can gamble from the comfort of your own home through websites and apps on your phone. Vegas is obviously gonna suffer. Not to mention it is a tourist destination for people all around the world, bit America becoming an isolationist country under dumb fuck has killed international tourism.

As a Canadian, my buddies and I were planning a trip to Vegas, renting a car, and driving to California. We scrapped that plan and have no plans to head to the USA anytime soon. I really hope you guys get your shit together soon.

7 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I saw it once. It was too crowded, too expensive, and honestly there werent many attractions I'd want to see twice.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They want to blame millennials but we aren't the youths anymore.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yep. same "are millenials killing this industry?" energy, but cant credibly blame people in their 30s and 40s for this shit anymore.

As a traveller, I’m looking forward going through US customs and get the Bergen-Belsen experience when checking in.

As an Australian I'm skipping the USA entirely until you put his head on a pike and put in some laws to prevent idiots in the Whitehouse, like you wouldn't get a lawyer who hasn't passed the bar exam, you wouldn't get a Dr if they didn't have a doctorate. So why have you got an unqualified racist pedo in charge?

You just found out part of FAFO. The majority of people going to Las Vegas were from overseas or maybe even undocumented to spend money... Now they're gone maybe never to return if nothing changes.

7 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

According to last Vegas own data the top 2 tourist countries were Canada and Mexico, making up more tourists than the rest of the world combined.

Soo.... yeah.... they just kinda fucked over half your tourists populations....

And the rest of the world isn't exactly clamoring to fill the void.

I was in Vegas for the first time in many years, many years and it is an entirely different place. When I first went there, there were free or cheap food options and they plied you with free drinks the moment you sat down. Now, everything is super expensive ($70 for two portions of takeout with just water) and they even charge for parking. In order to get free drinks, you have to sign up for a casino card and even then have to spend a minimum to get a Coke.

My theory is that they don’t need to…

7 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

See the story where a high roller blackjack player making $25k bets couldn't get his drinks comped?

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

…pander to the penny slots crowd anymore as online gambling has than that slice. Instead, they cater on mid-to high rollers, special events, and parties. The strip is super expensive. The north still has some bargains and penny slots but caters to an older clientele.

For people outside the US, there are better, safer, cheaper places to travel. And inside the US, we have no money.

Yeah, and it's not just Vegas -- it's down across the board. I grew up in a small beachside tourist town that goes from something like 6000 permanent residents in the off-season, to being the second most populated municipality during the summer tourism months. The number of visitors is WAY down this summer. Like, ALARMINGLY down. And we're in a blue state, even.

Are we great again, Donald?

7 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

No one is fully comfortable opening their wallets this summer in anticipation of an upcoming economic crash, that’s my pet theory. The market is sketchy and economic outlooks are bleak as hell for most of the travel industry. I know I talk smack online and all that but even I have had to check myself lately that this will eventually crash and I am not prepared.

7 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

what could possibly be putting them off?https://imgur.com/bW0Lmfg

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True, but it's not even that. Our tourism was almost entirely from folks in neighboring states, not overseas visitors. People just aren't travelling as much in-country, due to all the problems and concerns and uncertainty.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All the money is used up, and younger Americans can't find any... clearly they are to blame.

What does international travel have to do with Americans visiting Vegas?

7 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Lots of international tourists and trade shows/conventions have typically been hosted there.

7 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It’s because am stupid, I forgot about the americans part of the headline when I went around looking for other sources to verify the NY Post article. The I got caught up reading about the overall drop in travel and fudged the blurb:

Same. I just don't get it.

Always felt like the idea of Vegas is way better than actual Vegas.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I produce corporate events so I have to go there several times a year for at least a week at a time and it's miserable. It's not glamorous. It's full of lumpy people in jorts and Oakleys from Arkansas who think that Vegas is glamorous.

7 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Agreed. The place represents a lot of what is wrong in this country and being trapped inside by the heat gives me a feeling of being suffocated and cooked.

7 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I’ve gone out of my way to avoid Vegas. I’ve declined work and opted out of all-expense-paid convention shit because Vegas. I voluntarily went to San Fucking Jose for a week instead of Vegas. Etc. Place is a gaudy monument to American rot.

Cirque de Soleil shows are good. We saw Beatles LOVE and Ka.

Also the Bellagio Flower Garden is free and beautiful.

7 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I enjoyed Cirque de Soleil and some headliner comedians, but I'd never go back at this point. That city attracts so many unsavory people. The energy there just feels dirty.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree. I hate the ashtrays they call casinos and now everywhere, inside and out, smells of skunk 🦨

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The main strip is so family friendly now that the feeling of old Vegas is completely gone from there. Even Freemont is much cleaner than it used to be.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gambling doesn't make sense to me, I've never gotten any thrill from putting a coin in just to statistically lose. The other games are just the same, but people and basic probability instead of a machine. Either way, you are more likely to lose. Unless you're a professional poker player, you're gonna have an expensive time. Vegas is just a neon temple of gambling addiction.

7 months ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

He bankrupted his casinos. Now it’s going to be Vegas. 🤷🏼‍♂️

7 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Gambling makes sense to me: I am throwing away money... boo.

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Gambling is a no-no for me, however spending money to entertain myself is different, I know that I won't be gaining money, but I will be a fun time, a pricey entertainment, but no different than other activities like going to see a game or a show, that's how I see it.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a town built on people who think their "luck" trumps the odds. I used to go there and make money on every trip, but it was playing poker in very soft low stakes tournaments. People didn't appreciate the blind structure and its impact on the game. I almost always made the final table, generally cashed and sometimes won. A few of those in a week and you were set. I'd spend the rest of the off strip enjoying the local restaurants like King of Siam and Baby Cakes.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's just adult carnival games. I rarely go, but when I do I stick to the $5-10 tables and can usually make 100 last at least an hour. Also can get free drinks out of it.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are plenty of other things to do in Vegas besides gambling. Shows, food, sights to see, museums, etc... That said, it can still be pricey.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I went to Vegas and did very little gambling. Mostly sight seeing and eating and shows. I have never been much into gambling either. My mom and I had a blast, though.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I get an odd kind of enjoyment out of slot machines. It's like jiggling keys in front of a baby, something about the spinning is mesmerizing.

That said, fuck using actual money to play them. I'll stick to video games that randomly have a casino in them.

7 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

i recommend pso2 for that, best slot machine i've ever played

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup yup, I've spent many hours at the Rappy slots. The Arkuma slots too.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been to Vegas. the city was engineered to separate people from money at every level.

7 months ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

The fact that it’s incredibly hot, way too hot to spend any amount of time outside helps a lot too

7 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I've been forced to go there multiple times for work. Never saw anything worth spending money on. I suppose it's geared to target the type of person who would want to go there in the first place.

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The only thing I can think of is maybe a super high end restaurant. Occasionally I like to treat myself to a really good meal. But, I wouldn’t fly to Vegas just for a meal. I’ve always thought Vegas was campy, even as a kid, well especially as a kid since I wouldn’t be able to gamble, but gambling has never been a vice for me.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s a great base to fly into for a Fallout: New Vegas trip!

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Vegas is also now overcharging for everything.

7 months ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Been to Vegas 20 years, 10 years, and 1 year ago. It is so much worse now. There is almost nothing cheap to do. And you would not believe how many boutique luxury goods stores there are. If you're on the strip, and you suddenly need a $5,000 wristwatch, you have a hundred stores within easy walking distance ready to help you.

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I mean, they have always overcharged, but I've heard it's worse recently.

I was interested, I thought it something you experience once, you know cheap flights there, get a cheap hotel room, gamble a few hundred, eat some fancy foods, see the sights. But the last five bar/restaurant checks I've seen from Vegas where just WAY out of my price range. Like I understand why NYC is expensive, small island, center of a lot of global trade, there is reason to be there. There is literally no reason to be in Vegas. You can do everything elsewhere cheaper & in cooler weather.

7 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

GOP is the Grand Old Party(aka the republican party in the US), GQP is a derogatory slang term for them, more specifically to republican politicians who align with the more extremist ideas or conspiracy theories. My assumption is the Q part rose up around the time of Qanon heyday.

A lot has to do with Vegas strip casinos squeezing the golden goose dry. In the last few years, rooms are up, payouts are down, less table games, huge resort fees, paid parking, reduced services, less shows, less free entertainment and treating employees like shit. They have shot themselves in the foot

7 months ago | Likes 133 Dislikes 1

All of this. I made a separate comment but will say it again: they forgot they were the kind of cheap, fun weekends. Not a resort town.

7 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Sooo.. enshitification?

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Shot themselves in the head!

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Machine payouts used to be 86 to 89%. Now it's 75%, hoping for sunk cost fallacy "I already paid for the flight and hotel, better gamble"

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is exactly it. It used to be dirt cheap to fly to and stay at a decent hotel in Vegas because they know once you are there, you are going to spend money. They even would hand out liquor for free to keep you playing. Now, flight and hotel are as much or more than a tropical beach vacation. Liquor is over priced, and all the fun is gone.

7 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

I think that is a symptom of the "problem". The problem, if you can call it that, is that vegas was engineered around an ideal of recreation that appealed to boomers and to a lesser degree, gen-x. But Millenials and Gen-z are not as into gambling and big overthetop displays of decadence. There's probably a dozen reasons why there was a shift in taste—I can think of at least 3 obvious ones off the top of my head—but at the end of the day, vegas is a relic built for a dying generation.

7 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

So the milenials killed vegas? I wouldn't say that, plenty of young people there. My son loves vegas and he's a zoomer

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I mean, like saying millenials killed the corded phone. Times change, tastes change, things replace things. I'm not saying no younger people like vegas, hell there is still a lot to like in vegas that isn't gambling and excess. I was just there for a sphere show and went to Omega mart, had a blast. But what I am saying is there has been a gradual shift away from that which made vegas the most money. Does your zoomer son go to vegas yearly and spend thousands at the casino? Because that was a >>

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

normal thing for a boomer to do. Still is even. But I don't think the younger generations are doing that. I don't know a single millennial that does a yearly vegas trip like the older gen used to do. And folks that are going still (yearly or otherwise) are not spending as much at casinos or on lavish buffets. I'm sure there will be countless anecdotal accounts you can point to, but speaking broadly, thats whats happening. //

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

There didn't used to be lavish restaurants, that's my point. Buffets were cheap, everything was cheap to bring people in.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I went a few years ago for the first time in a decade. It was exponentially more expensive. The resort fees were actually more than my room. The food was expensive. Shows were more expensive. I didn't win anything at all. I ended up leaving early.

7 months ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Wait, there's a resort fee even if you're starting at that hotel?! I thought resort fees were only for people who weren't staying at the hotel but wanted to use the hotel's facilities! But a quick websearch shows that it can indeed be an additional fee even if you're staying in that hotel! wtf

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah. Pretty sure they called it a resort fee, but they said it was for wifi and various other random bullshit that every hotel everywhere else in the country I've stayed just included in the room price. The room itself was super cheap because it was during the week and off-season, but the additional resort fee was 80% of what I paid for the room.

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

wow, I had no idea.
I was there ~32 years ago (age 18, had a 21+yo blast of a time) but no desire to go back. You've convinced me I've no need to.

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Did they expand the slots sections when they took out the table games?

I haven’t been in a decade or so, and I stayed away from the strip last time for this exact reason, it’s too crowded and expensive. I would guess a room on the strip starts at 4 figures these days (per night)?

7 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yep, was out there last year and the slots section dwarfs everything else. That combined with people working on personal records for chain smoking just made the whole gambling experience lose a lot of its luster. The room rates are typically absurd as well, the only reason it was decent when I went was because my friend has killer deals through her workplace.

7 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Oh man, I forgot about the chain smoking slot jockeys. As an ex-smoker, I just cant stand the stale smell anymore.

Yeah sounds like no one is missing out by avoiding Vegas for a while.

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wait, you can smoke indoors??? That shit had been banned in my country over 20 years!
The thought of it is just so gross!

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There just isn't the appeal any more. The whole hedonist thing of going for cheap buffets, fun gambling and decent pricing (off holiday) for rooms is long gone.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tbe good news is the big strip casinos have pretty good air equipment so it isn't crazy smoky. But it is in the older Fremont street casinos

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Even sticking to the strip casinos it was pretty bad last time I went. I don't have any respiratory issues and it took me days after that trip before I could get in full breaths. I think the only places that were worse are the Indian casinos out my way since they're they only place left in the state where you can smoke in public.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes more slots with huge confusing screens and games no one understands. All with the worst gambling odds of any casinos

I last stayed on the strip in 2019, and it wasn't rediculus yet. Something like 60/night and before resort fees were a big deal. Our tahoe casinos here haven't got super bad yet.

7 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah those giant screens are a pain in the neck, I hated them when I saw them.

So Vegas is slowly turning into Reno then lol

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nah, reno is it's own thing, and not pricey AF. I lived there for many years. Although I didn't go to the casinos unless out of town friends dragged me or we had a show

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a canadian, even if the tariffs and the blatant disrespect toward us weren't a thing right now, I'd still avoid the US at all cost because of ICE, border control possibly detaining me and just well everything.

People are done with the US, and sadly I fear that Trump will use that to rattle his stupid base against other countries even more

A few weeks ago a countryman of mine (Germany) was detained in the border, while having a valid green card, upon re-entry to the US and disappeared for a few weeks, without his us wife or kids knowing what was going on. No thank you.

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

On my last US visit I was delayed almost an hour by US immigration, no doubt due to a long history of criticizing the US leadership in my comments, before I was allowed to pass. I would certainly never risk that these days with ICE super active.

7 months ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

From what i hear, the U.S. is basically asking for security deposits for people outside the U.S. to visit too. Ranging from 5k to 15k. So yeah, no one wants to visit if they have to give several extra grand and hope the country doesn't have some loophole to pocket it

But as far as trump's supporters go, even some of them are having doubts because of the epstein list. They want the full list, no redacted names, and the fact that trump is trying to suppress it is only fanning the flames

No. It's extremely difficult to find work, own property or much else in Canada without your residency permits sorted. Canada is very accepting to refugees but one does need to prove that they are potentially targeted for something that in Canada would be a human right. Thank you. I always enjoyed going to your country.
Border town visits and winters in Florida.
Just can’t do it any more.
I feel sorry for you and yours.
Many good Americans are and will be hurt.
I can’t be around that.

I'm certain there are terrible fates ahead for us, the remaining good people of the states, uncaptured by the hysteria of maga. There may either be war, or escape, or detainment. Perhaps I will come north for sanctuary.

Canada is welcoming tourists, you'd be supporting our economy by traveling here!

Heh, yeaah, travel to….. ugh, I’ve already lost everything and started over SO MANY times. I think I’d rather die than have to jump through hoops to live in a new country.
