So for Christmas my strange thoughtful boyfriend got me a big bag of Oysters

They came vacuum packed individually.

My first feeling was confusion but quickly changed to delight when I realized they weren't for me to eat.

I had to shuck them, some were easier then others.

They smelled pretty foul

Black Pearl!

Black Pearl!

Pink Pearl

Ended up with 54 pearls, had about 5 different colors

THAT'S A VONNEGUT TATTOO ON YOUR WRIST.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I plan on getting some pearls before I wrap up this deployment. They have them pretty cheap downtown.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Best boyfriend ever. Damn my masculine tears.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Also your jumpsuit is cute.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How many pearls is that? How much did that coast? Are you going to make a necklace out of that? Do you live near a dark alley?

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's some original gift giving... I'm stealing it.

12 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 2

A classic you made this...I made this situation. Oh the internet!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

thats like a 10,000 dollar necklace right there. someone get me some oysters!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, no. They are man-made, not natural. By man-made, I mean the pearls are seeded in the oysters. Cultivated. Expensive, but not 10,000

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just to let you know when you pull a "real" pearl out of a oyster it is not perfectly round they are all bumpy and miss shaped.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is the coolest strangest nicest gift I've ever seen O.O

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Okay thats awesome... and so is your jumpsuit... where can i get one? I need one bad.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think it's from the Ellen Ripley collection

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

wow, who cares about the actual cost value. it's a thoughtful gift, those who are saying the pearls are worthless are just jealous and alone

12 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

surgically placed grains of sand can make pearl-bearing oysters!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually, they discovered that placing a small piece of another oyster's shell in another oyster produced massive pearls quickly.

They are really high quality, that's impressive.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Probably seeded oysters.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're still a very good shape, even cultured pearls have a huge variety of quality.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i imagine he bought from a more high end company. Some will actual culture tiny pearls then round them to perfection before using that is an

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

irritant for the retail pearls. More often than not if the irritant is perfectly round, the pearl will be too.

There are farms that grow cultured pearls. A small piece of sand is placed inside, oyster secretes stuff to deal with irritant = pearl.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. If I remember correctly, there are companies that purposefully (and artificially) create pearls by forcing sand into the oysters.

no they are not. Fresh water pearls are not as valuable. its the tahitian pearls that are.

12 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

...and the ones from Sri Lanka.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pearls aren't really that valuable these days anyway, there isn't much demand for them.

12 years ago | Likes 127 Dislikes 1

Everyone and their grandma was selling fake or hollow pearls, no one trusts them these days, nor are they fashionable anymore,Too bad really

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No! Surely a Grandma wouldn't do that!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love pearls I DEMAND THEM

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Also the black ones are cursed.

12 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

Wild/natural pearls are still in demand though. Always have and always will be. The farmed pearls however, have becomme too common.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

is there a way to tell the difference?

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

natural=from the wild, cultured=someone plants an object into the shell so pearl grows. today it's mostly estate/old/vintage that's natural.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

essentially the same thing, whether man puts the dirt/object in or nature does, it grows the same way so you just have to research sources

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There is still a demand, but its the fresh water pearls that are not very valuable, Tahitian pearls still are.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Balls of mollusk secretion are pretty fuckin gross anyways

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well shit, they're the prettiest cysts I've ever seen. Morticia Addams must've loved pearls knowing that.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They grow them... they usually put a small irritant inside and then the oyster grows the pearl around it.

There's actually quite a bit of research to suggest they can't feel pain and have no sense of awareness. They're lower than bugs.

12 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 1

Not really; it doesn't hurt the oyster.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It actually tends to give lower-quality pearls than naturally-formed pearls if I remember correctly

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

exactly.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seafood is pretty fair game when it comes to cruelty. People let fish die in the floor of their boats after all.

12 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I think putting a tiny bit of sand inside a creature that lives in the ocean is pretty safe moral ground.

Usually a piece of sand is the natural irritant that gets you a real pearl.

That's how they form in the wild. No meaner than a lion eating a zebra. It's just life.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Eh, it's likely they'd get something in there anyway. This just insures quality and size.

12 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 1

so are they good or poor quality?

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, not specifically. I meant more, shape, texture, etc. Not a huge demand for oblong pearls.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ensure* unless you're here to tell me how 15 minutes could save me 15% or more by switching to Geico

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's the shucking that harms them, not the irritant.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, the 'irritant' is more about damage than pain. Oysters aren't capable of feeling a whole lot.

12 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 4

It's okay to eat fish, cause they don't have any feelings... SOMETHING IN THE WAY, MMMMMMMMMMMMMM

12 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

...Oysters aren't fish. I eat neither oysters nor fish. What is your point, exactly?

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 9

You tell my pet Herbert

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let's think about that. if it's true then no need to encase irritants and form pearls. So ipso facto they feel and make pearls to feel less.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

Not really. You don't have to feel something for it to cause damage.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

However, their nervous system is quite limited (read: non-existent). Ipso facto, their preservation impulse to avoid damage ≠ pain.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Or so we think. We don't have a great understanding of the nervous system of shellfish/mollusks

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 6

It happens naturally in the wild. Usually forms around a grain of sand.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not cute = No fucks given. Yes that is how the world works.

Exactly!

I can attest to this...

Found the vegan, guys!!

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 9

You don't need to be vegan to know that. *punches a human baby*

I can agree with this. It's really not harming anything.

This isn't a universal view. But I respect your intellectual consistency.

Explain why vegans dont eat honey.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

My hardcore vegan friend eats honey from certain companies she trusts. *shrug*

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because bees get killed in honey harvesting.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

If it hasn't eyes u can kill it without remorse! :D

12 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 3

What about box jellies

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or if it has more than 2 eyes. Noone cares too much about bugs either.

12 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

I do...

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

:D

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What about a puppy born without eyes?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I patrol all the animal shelters of my city looking for those to kill them with joy.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

also no brain and thus no pain receptors.

12 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

I'll be honest i have no moral quandary about this the question mark was a typo and i guess it made me seem nice or something.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

have you heard live lobsters put in boiling water ?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 10

You think that's screaming? Try putting a rabbit in a pot a boiling water.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's steam bro not screams.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Its basically just a fancy giftbox for an already formed pearl that was placed inside. Its not like youre actually removing it from the sac

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 13

formed by the oysters she is opening. They have already been removed, cleaned, and then put back into an oyster like a gift in a giftbox.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

you said sac

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Giggity

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For anyone who is incapable of reading which is a surprising number, I am NOT saying theyre fake pearls, simply that they were not

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 7

That's not how cultured pearls work. They put a piece of sand in the oyster, then the oyster does in fact make the pearl.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

just read the "note" at the bottom of the page. They are artificially put BACK INSIDE once checked for quality

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I've never heard of this. My grandmother works for a company that sells oysters like this, you are not guaranteed a pearl.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

that have been formed, removed, polished, and then put BACK INSIDE an oyster for the buyer to "find"

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://www.cathaygems.com/Pearl_Resources/The_Formation_of_Pearls.html They are never removed. That would kill the oyster.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Please stop explaining to me how cultured pearls work, when I have SAID that they are cultured pearls. They just happen to be cultured pearl

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

After being removed from the oyster they were cultivated in.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Looked like she was removing it from the sac to me.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

No pearl comes right out of the sac looking like that. Not even a cultured one.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

depends on the irritant. I've heard of companies that will grow pearls only slightly larger than the original grain of sand then polish and

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

round them to use as an irritant. If the irritant is observably perfectly spherical, the pearl will turn out near prestine with no treatment

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

The implanted irritant has nothing to do with the cleanliness and polish of a pearl when it is removed. Simply the shape.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pearls fresh out of the sac do not have the same luster/shine as ones removed and then polished

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All of the ones she "found inside" had been formed, removed, polished, and put back.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, look up cultured pearls. It's a real pearl. Just not very valuable because they are easy to farm.

12 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

I never said it wasnt a real pearl. I said it wasnt a pearl from that actual oyster. They take an already fully formed pearl

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

In the name of reading comprehension, you have my upvote

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

and put it in an oyster. Thats what I mean by "its just a fancy giftbox"

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

they infact seed it, it's still a grown pearl just artificially inseminated pretty much.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

as the others have said, they cultured them, meaning they purposefully place an irritant into the oysters to cause them to create a pearl.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

they are less valuable though because it hasn't happened naturally, there are plenty of websites for businesses that sell pearls they cultur

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

If you dont infact believe me on this, simply go look at ANY of the links here regarding "where OP got hers"

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Do you understand now what is going on, and that I am very much aware of what a cultured pearl is?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Please learn to read. You must have never seen a pearl fresh out of the sac it forms in. Even cultured ones need to be cleaned and polished.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

What is happening here is a cultured pearl is formed, REMOVED from the sac, cleaned and polished, and then put BACK INSIDE an oyster.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No, they insert something similar to a grain of sand into the shell. That irritates the Oyster and it starts to produce a mucus membrane 1/2

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

cleaned up, and placed BACK INSIDE a clam. That is what is going on here. Do I need to spell it out more clearly?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

an oyster looking like that. It is covered in grime when removed from the sac it forms in. Thus a cultured pearl was grown, REMOVED

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Wow. Please learn to read. I am clearly aware that it is a cultured pearl. The thing is even a cultured pearl does NOT right out of
