Officer White was recently dispatched to a call of kids playing basketball "loudly" in the streets. In the evening. Having fun. Not committing crimes.

The incident was recorded and you can see the video at the Gainsville PDs Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/GainesvillePolice/

In the video Officer White does nothing but inform the kids that he has no problem with them playing. He then beings to play basketball with them. When all is said and done he tells them to just keep it down in the evening and that he'll be back tomorrow with backup to play a pick-up game!

The images below were posted to the GPD Facebook today.

Well, Shaq surprised us and dropped by GPD this afternoon. He saw our viral video and wanted to meet Officer White. More importantly, he heard that Ofc. White was planning to bring backup to challenge the kids to a street game. These kids will never forget the day Shaq rolled up to their house to play ball. (Photos by Ofc. Ben Tobias/GPD)

This was a cool thing that happened in my home town and I wanted to share it with all of you.

All photographs were provided by the Gainesville PD. Thank you for your service.

What annoyed me most about the caller was it was only 5pm, like it's not even dark yet (in FL). Let the fuckin' kids play in daylight.

Almost downvoted the repost. Glad I scrolled down.

Yep. Just today, I saw a cop on the side of the road helping someone fill their gas tank. :-)

Wow Shaq is such a lovely person. Never knew.

This makes me happy! Kids are happy, adults are happy, no one is dead.

Was this on Cops? I remember seeing something like this.

I do too; can't be sure though. I think it was one of the recent episodes.

I'm glad that people are posting so many Pro- Law Enforcement posts up! Everyone needs to see that cops can be good people!

Notice how there are no pictures of Shaw shooting freethrows.

This warms my cold cynical heart.

I love how when Shaq gets out of the car you can hear someone say "It's Shaq, GOD DAMN!"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The lesson here is if you become a cop you get to meet Shaq!

This is so cool! Great way to get kids into doing something healthy!

"Be a good cop and you'll get to meet Shaq." Sounds like a good incentive. Should be a marketing campaign.

Hello from St Aug!

There are some decent people in the GPD. It's nice to hear about something like this.

He's a tall man

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which means most of those kids are fully grown.

*reaches up* *hops* *dunks*

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There was no hop. Just dunk

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

why didn't they take off their utility belts or whatever? seems weird playing ball with a gun on your waist

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

A combination of maintaining readiness and not leaving sensitive equipment unattended.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And where would you put it?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i dunno. lock it in the car or something? maybe just show up wearing street clothes since they planned this big event

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't think they're allowed to do that. What if they get a call?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i'm saying. just do it off duty or something. it's a loaded weapon on your waist. that's a weird way to foster friendship

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They want cops to appear non-threatening in their normal setting, as you would see them on duty. It makes sense to me.

Bet that lady who called is feeling like a real horses ass

10 years ago | Likes 161 Dislikes 1

Yeah, I bet she doesn't get an autographed ball

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Silver lining: if she had never called, none of this would have happened. It was still an ass move but look what came of it.

I bet Shaq missed a few jump shots

*most

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why? She got what she called for. The officer told them to keep it down in the evening.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Nah, the officer reminded them to keep it down in the evening. I don't think he had a problem with them at 5pm

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We don't have all the details. Maybe they were just playing, maybe they were screaming bloody murder when she called. 1/?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think she should automatically be the horse's ass. She called the people that are better equipped to deal with the situation 2/?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and thankfully the officer did a great job (as well as finding out there was nothing actually wrong) 3/3

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're absolutely right, we don't have all the details. That was just what i inferred. I could easily be wrong.
