What?!? A letter from a President that isn't in all CAPS and rambling incoherently. A letter that has actual compassion and intelligence behind it. Now this is Presidential.

Not being american WhoTF is Hank Green?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He's a YouTuber who started educational shows like Crash Course and SciShow, wrote two books (An Absolutely Remarkable Thing) and makes videos and a podcast with his brother, noted author John Green. He recently started chemo therapy for lymphoma.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Meanwhile over on Truth Social Trump is in all caps again grieving about the death of Pat Robinson, and what a great loss to humanity and the world he was! Pat fucken 'I'm so bigoted' Robertson that's the type of person Trump idolised JUST to suck up to his Christofacist base. What a wanker.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hank Green! I love his work, but the poor guy is fighting cancer. I hope he kicks its ass and can keep making educational content. ♥

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Trump would have said “I only like people that don’t have cancer “

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

“Dear John’s brother,”

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I may not agree with him all the time but at least I know he's a good man trying his best.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Hank or Joe? Also: Does anyone agree with anyone ALL the time?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't like Biden. His voting record is atrocious, especially when you include the things he spearheaded. But this is good, even if it costs him nothing. I hope Hank comes out ok.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think a lot of us are just happy to have not Trump in office

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Joe Biden cares so deeply. The entire country should be cherishing him. He supports others & builds them up. Has a REP pres, ever...?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I know he likely didn't write this (although it does really read like he speaks) but you have to admire it. That's just a simply kind gesture without asking for anything in return.

what a way to find out hank green has cancer...

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's a very treatable kind of cancer and it was caught early so the prognosis is good. He has posted a couple of videos about it. We're all hoping he's gonna be OK.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, he's probably going to live but chemo is going to fuck him up.

I'm sorry for you, but I'm struggling to see how this is relevant?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Very fair. I struggle to see that company as anything other than a business. Call me cynical but my point is that they don't actually care about people. Just making sure you come back to them when you get a new pet.

I hate that Americans all have to be religious and make a show of it to even have a chance to lead. So bizarre.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

I will always vouch for someone of no religious affiliation whatever to hold office. Even the playing field; complete separation of church and state.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nobody has to be religious. Have you considered that perhaps he actually is?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Not everyone does. Clinton never made a thing of it. Trump didn't either.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Trump had protestors pepper-sprayed so he could stand in front of a church holding up a Bible.

I think Hank Green is best summarized as a science communicator. A bit like a younger Bill Nye.

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

It's such a small gesture but it means so much. It's really that easy to be empathetic and kind.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Holy shit

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I feel like Hank Green is, to a lot of younger people, who Bill Nye was in the 90s.

2 years ago | Likes 1121 Dislikes 0

Wow I think he'd be kinda speechless to see that comparison

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

heck I'm not even that young anymore and he's still a good dude that I enjoy watching on yt

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Same, I'm creeping up on 40 alarmingly quickly. Found him through Microcosmos and now I watch vlog bros and scishow all the time.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've heard Bill Nye is kind of a dick.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 12

Don't know why you were getting down voted so much there...

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A bit but a lot of it is out of frustration from my understanding which I can't blame.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

He's from my hometown, and I met him through Ze Frank when was doing a show/the show before he sold out (and then did copy-paste animal videos)... I have a big heart for him.

2 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

To be certain the he…was doing copy/paste animal videos is referring to Ze and not Hank?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

True Facts is next level

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He is. I constantly get that vibe from him. Just wholesome educating in a fun way. The Trif-force of good guy learning (Bill Nye, Bob Ross, and Levar Burton) is slowly becoming a quad-force.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I only know him from his books, which admittedly I thoroughly enjoyed. Admittedly, I'm from the Bill Nye generation, so...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You may be thinking of his brother John, the author

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are both authors, Hank just does a million other things for the author thing to sometimes get buried by.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I assure you, I am not

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know who doesn't get enough credit for being the cool guy who taught millions of kids cool shit? Mr. Wizard. I thought the dude was a 1980s Nickelodeon thing, but he had a show in the 50s as well. He made me into a science nerd. Love that dude.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Dude gets a lot of graduation announcements. If you’re opening 50 letters a day, and assuming all of them are graduation announcements, then one turns out to be a letter from the President, you’d be surprised, too.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Hank and his brother are widely considered educators and perhaps kids they have influenced in some way have sent them graduation announcements?

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that much I figured, I just don't understand why he considered this a graduation announcement. Maybe he just meant it's what he originally assumed it to be because he receives so many?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Probably similar envelope size and paper thickness? So it would looks like the announcements in shape and style, I'm guessing.

He wouldn't waste his time. He prefers winners who don't get cancer.

2 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I gotta tell ya, I've been through a lot in my life, and let me tell you, this was no different. It was a tough battle, a real tough battle, but guess what? I fought it like a champion. The doctors, they said it was gonna be tough, but I showed 'em what I'm made of. I said, "I'm not going down without a fight!" I tackled that cancer head-on, like a winner. And you know what? I beat it. I beat that nasty thing. It was a tough road, but I'm stronger than ever. I'm a fighter. #TrumpStrong

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"I hear you have cancer. I'm sorry to hear that, even though you voted for WEAK Hillary. I beat her badly even despite the millions of illegal votes. Did you know, they were busing people across state lines to vote again in order to try and beat me. But they couldn't do it. Couldn't do it. Even fake news CNN said it was the biggest victory in political history."

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This is so accurate it's scary.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm not typically one to care about celebrities in the anything near the way I might care about someone I actually know, but Hank is just such a good dude that I was genuinely pretty gutted when I learned he has cancer. I hope he gets through it as quickly and painlessly as possible.

not to detract from Hank and what he's facing; but whatever happened with Simone Giertz and her tumour? did they get it all? I comment Simone because I found her diagnosis as equally unfortunate as Hank

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

They removed it, it came back in 2019, she got radiation treatments for it. She's still currently working, so it looks like those worked? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simone_Giertz

Like he says in his video, if you've got to have lymphoma, Hodgkin's is the one you want, and that's what he's got. He's got good odds!

2 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

Not to mention he also says they caught it quite early, and from his latest video about his chemo schedule sounds like treatments are getting even better and evolving. I think he's got great odds, even, although nothing is guaranteed.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I guess so. That's what my sister's husband had though, and he didn't make it. :( They gave him good odds, too. Hopefully Hank won't be one of the unlucky ones.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The 5-year relative survival rate of people with localized Hodgkin lymphoma is 93%. If the cancer spreads regionally, the 5-year relative survival rate is 95%. If the cancer has spread to different parts of the body, the 5-year relative survival rate is 83%. However, someone has to be in that 7%, 5%, and 17%, respectively. So odds are it's likely he won't die, but there's no guarantee.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Exactly. The percentages are good in general, but some people are still the unlucky ones, sadly. :( I hope he's not in that group.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

... well, today I learned Hank has cancer. God damn it.

2 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 0

A cancer with an incredibly high survival-rate. Same one I had. There's plenty of hope that this is just a bump in the road for him

2 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 0

Good to hear but even still, cancer is always incredibly draining mentally, physically, and financially. Still worth a "god damn it".

well, they know each other personally so I don't think it is. If someone you worked with had cancer, would you not wish them well? You'd probably do it verbally, but the president has a staff for that. So I wouldn't consider it a waste of time to spend 5 minutes writing or dictating a short letter, signing it, then handing it to a staffer to mail. That's about how long I'd spend asking someone how their cancer treatment is going at work.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It sounds like him. (I'm not young so I've heard him many many times in a variety of scenarios over the years.) Even if a staffer typed this they got it down pat. And I'll bet Pres Biden signs each one. He's just like that....

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Trump would have just shit in an envelope and mailed it

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Only if he could send it "postage due".

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A lot is done by volunteers. My folks did it during Bush Jr. admins. You get perks (or did) like attending the Easter Egg Roll, White House visits, etc. Got to play with the dog when it ran out during a visit.

There's no way someone can send out letters like this on behalf of the President without his authorization. Like that staffer would be fired in an instant.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

Presidents have a fuck ton of different people that answer or look at every letter POTUS gets sent. https://youtu.be/vpraOcxPESA

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

GETS sent. No one is sending a letter outward FROM the president without approval.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's approved and appreciated, likely had the words written and signed to approve the sentiment. He cares but there's only so much time in a day.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly he probably didn't actually sign it, they'd use an auto-pen, but it's absolutely reasonable to think he knows who Hank Green is and genuinely wanted to reach out.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think anyone is suggesting staff are sending these without his authorization. I suspect it's a very loose authorization though - a simple "hey Joe, we're sending out a bunch of letters wishing people well in their fight with a disease" and Joe says "OK".

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

The fact that people don't believe it's possible for a president to know who anyone is just baffles me. Obama did an AMA on Reddit himself and referenced memes. Why couldn't Biden know Hank?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It wouldn't be surprising for Obama, but Biden is 80 years old and has to have memes explained to him by his grandchildren. I doubt he's ever actually used the Internet.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There are 100yo people who have YouTube channels, come on. I don't think he's out there watching the latest iiluminaughtii drama but the idea of him knowing channels like Hank Green or Tom Scott isn't at all a reach.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think people are suggesting it's impossible - it's just highly unlikely.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm President of a mid-size museum, which I have to imagine is a smaller job than being President of a large-size country, but even then the amount of mail that goes out in my name that I've never read is pretty substantial.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

That sounds dangerous, tbh. Why not have it in the name of your office? Like “from the Office of [name]?”

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The stuff I don't read is primarily marketing materials. Legal or financial documents I read quite carefully. They have a pull-quote and a photo I've pre-approved them to sick onto whatever.
