Can’t deny that early Dave is funny, but I can keep watching K&P and laugh my ass off. Feel free to sound off with your favorites. I love me some Annie Hathaways. #memes #unpopular_opinion_puffin

Chapelle was brilliant at one point. As good as or better than any of his contemporaries. But after he left his show, his comedic instincts crashed & burned.

And then he told us who he was.

(Very disappointed in him as a human being.)

I don't really care about the comparison. Chappelle show at the time was hilarious, Key and Peele in its time, has been hilarious. There are sketches from both that didn't land for me and plenty of the interstitial standup between the sketches that was just luke warm on both, but the iconic sketches are great. I think more of Key and Peele will age much better, especially assuming they don't do anything to mar their reputation, but it's also a different style.

Look at this guy spoutin' objective truths!

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

I mean, yeah?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Never really found Chappell funny. Key and peele…. Always hilarious. To be fair some of Peele’s films have been meh but this I can forgive.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I didn't watch K&P at the time, so it's a thing I'm learning but... yeah. They are.

5 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

I wouldn’t say way better. Chappelle is more iconic which leads me to believe it’s actually better. But in all honesty I’d say they’re about the same. The difference is Chappelle did 2 seasons and had zero episodes that weren’t hilarious. Key and peele have more funny episodes but they also have some that are pretty dull

New Dave or old Dave because old Dave never missed

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Dave seems depressed.

Dave went from punching up, to punching to the side, to punching down. He totally changed when he quit the chappelle show and ran off with his money.

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

K&P are great and some of their skits are hilarious. They have both also had excellent careers since. Having said that, they feel like Chappelle with the rough edges filed down. Much less controversial and marketable, much more corporate friendly.

Funny or not, it's important to understand how significant Chappelle Show was to the evolution and trajectory of the medium. They would not have a show without him.

It's like Jaws - it may seem quaint in hindsight compared to Avengers Endgame, but its significant in the timeline cannot be overstated.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Chapelle can be incredibly funny and deep but a life time of money has turned him into something ugly. I mean, that guy defended ye ol' Muskrat on stage. Fuck him.

5 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

At least with current Dave Chapelle - I can go either way on The Chapelle Show era Dave and Key & Peele depending on how nostalgic I'm feeling.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Proper and correct use of the template.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

100% agree. My favorite skit is the gremlins 2 writing room.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, as a show though, Chapelle’s Show was way more lit. Basically a concert performance every shown

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A comedian's job is to reflect society with truth in ways society doesn't want to acknowledge, and make you laugh while they do it. People might not like Chapelle and his views, but you can't deny that he isn't giving everyone a gut-punch of reality that people don't always want to accept. Defending Elon may have been a step too far though.

He walked so they could run

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

I think they earned their place independent of Dave's efforts. Keegan came up in the sketch comedy world the old school way

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Came here to say this

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Downvote for misuse of meme. Why would you drag Key and Peele down to Chappelles level?

5 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 11

I will never ever ever stop laughing my ass off at their Gremlins 2 sketch... it might be what kills me. Star Magic Jackson Jr... real-life person, real-life meeting, played flawlessly. I can watch those two forever. Amazing comedic talents.

I also love the Prince/basketball sketch but Chappell has turned into a total dick & is no longer funny... just a whinger.

Are they the ones from the meme where one dude shoots the other in the chair then asks who would do this?

They're the ones riding the car in Weird Al's White and Nerdy.

No

No, but they are the ones from the "Noice" meme, afaik

I recently took a class a few months ago led by a Jackie whose real name was Jacqueline and this sketch was literally the first thing she talked about on the first day when introducing herself. That other sketch about people who have led hard lives because of this sketch is fucking REAL.

5 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

As an A-A-Ron their is a sketch about my struggles? (fun story when this episode aired I was off camping and missed it and I came home after week-ish to everyone yelling "YOU DONE MESSED UP!" at me with no context, fun times)

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yes there is. It's not a K&P production, it's just a fan fic about it. But still good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U54hh395ykk

ah yes, the apple of sketch comedy vs the orange of...sketch comedy

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Stand-up vs sketches.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I mean Chappelle got most famous for his sketch show. He had some movie success, some stand up success but his show was a rocket to the moon.

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I always forget about that show, our local Comedy Central never aired it. And it never will anymore, as Paramount is closing CCs, alongwith the music only MTVs. I hate this so much.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Chapelle Show was better. Way better. Then he fucking lost his mind.

5 months ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 10

Fucken oath!! Half Baked era Dave was pure gold, Chappelle's Show was peak, K&P just seemed like a silly version of his show IMO

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 7

As an old. Nahh

5 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Got money, got surrounded by yes men, power went to his head? Sounds like a not uncommon progression.

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I can't possible disagree with that statement more. Nothing wrong with the Chapelle Show. Great stuff. But it's obviously very subjective because Key and Peele have WAAAAAAAY more intelligent skits. It's not even close.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It wasn't way better but it has some iconic, stand-out skits. As does Key and Peele. I think if you paired up the best ones, K&P would win. Not much beats racist zombies, not even the black Klansman.

5 months ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

One of the things that made the Chappelle Show so good is the era that it came from. It was instantly iconic. Smashing boundaries. A trendsetter. There's no KP without Chappelle Show paving the way.

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Sure, but you could also say there's no Oreos without Hydrox and no Transformers without Gobots. Doesn't mean you can go see the new Gobots movie while eating a fresh pack of Hydrox. I can appreciate the cultural impact of DC but he's still not better as a skit show.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

To me, the Rick James sketch will always be the rare 11/10 bit because they actually had Rick right there not only verifying the stories but adding in funny lines like "cocaine is a helluva drug" and "I wouldn't just grind my shoes on somebody's couch... yeah I remember grinding my shoes on Eddie's couch" Overall I would say K&P has better consistent quality but the Rick James sketch is a golden egg

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

IDK the Prince sketch is stellar.

The roll call scene has indeliblly affected our culture.

and the wayne brady one

"so i make bryant gumble look like malcolm x, huh muthafucka?'

5 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Like a lot of older comedians, he just gets on stage and bitches. No real comedy.

5 months ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

I mean, Maron does that too, but he's still funny sometimes.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Got real caught up in his "fuck you" money too. He's skilled, and understands the structures of jokes, but that's only half of it. The subject matter is the other half. Long are the days since younger me watched Killing Them Softly on Comedy Central

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

isn't Chapelle a cunt and Key and Peele not-cunts?

5 months ago | Likes 236 Dislikes 18

He used to not be a cunt, or at least was better at hiding it

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

It’s a matter of appreciating art and his point of view as an artist. They didn’t give him a mark Twain award for nothing.

5 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 55

I get what you’re saying I think. You can enjoy a comic and his work without agreeing with them completely. I still watch Louie despite him being a diddler. I still watch fresh price despite Will being unhinged ect.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

His views as an artist? He stopped having views as an artist when he started talking about how good his life is because he has money and punches down on other people.

5 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

Which point of view are you talking about exactly? The anti-trans one?

5 months ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 3

The Ryad comedy thing maybe

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Chapelle WAS funny back in the day. Now it seems like most of his bits revolve around how awesome his life is, which isn't terribly interesting to listen to. To say nothing of his trash politics.

5 months ago | Likes 140 Dislikes 5

He became a rich piece of shit that licks Trump's boots. He can go DIAF.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He bought into his own hype.
He just became another rich asshole who thinks he's better than everyone else because he's rich.

5 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Very Jerry Seinfeld coded.

5 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Seinfeld was always like that, even before he became famous.
Becoming famous and wealthy simply let him get more air time about it.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Niggar Family -sketch is fucking goated, but boy did he fall off a cliff in terms of comedy.

5 months ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

He started punching down.

5 months ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

This is really it in a nutshell. When he was the outspoken voice against an abusive majority, he was sharp-witted, poignant and funny. Now that he’s rich and lazy, his humor is a collection of insults and mockery at struggling minorities, and anger at people that aren’t happy that he’s rich and uncaring.

5 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Doesn't he, like, own a town? A whole-ass town?

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yellow Springs? He doesn’t own it but seems to have a lot of property there. I went to visit friends who live there last year. It is a very cool liberal arts oasis in the middle of Ohio.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

True

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep. All those people defended him when he made those anti-trans comments, even here on imgur, and the Chappelle went and doubled down on his bullshit. I hope his defenders have the decency to be embarrassed and admit they were wrong.

5 months ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 9

They don't. Same people unwilling to let go of HP.

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

When he first came back with a special, even I a trans woman was like, eh it wasn't THAT bad. but then he just kept doubling down and tripling down on the shit and it really showed us who he is.

5 months ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

I felt the same but as soon as I talked to people in the lgbtq community that did find it offensive I was like, nah this violates the comedy rule of no punching down at people, only punch up. And then yeah he could've just let it go and apologized, and then didn't and that was nail two in a two-nail coffin

5 months ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

While his initial trans routine wasn't that bad, it was already clear that the point of the "joke" was cruelty and nothing else. Chapelle's style of comedy generally relies heavily on crossing the line twice into absurdity, which he did in his routine on every topic, except for the trans part. Instead of making a joke by pushing it into offensive absurdity he just regurgitated the talking points of bigots verbatim, and left it at that. His justification of why its okay to make that joke also

5 months ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

ignored the very real existence of black trans people, and how they're the demography most likely to get killed in cold blood when minding their own business in a public restroom. He threw his own people under the bus for that sweet, sweet conservative money, all because trans people are a group he can get away with punching down on even by his own peers.

5 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I've only seen his trans-supportive stuff and seemingly honest and heartfelt story about his trans friend. What was the jist of the punching down trans joke? Was it crude boomer humor?
