So there I am, 2012, on S. Topeka Blvd, in my 82 Camaro & "Carry On My Wayward Son" is just BLASTING. A Harley matches pace with me & I look over & its Kerry. Got a nod, grin, & devil horns & he pulled away, passing me. BEST DAY EVAR!
My kids' Grandpa, Jim, named his son Dusty, after his favorite song, Dust In The Wind. Dusty passed away as a young adult. Kansas played a gig in Arkansas, and Jim wound up getting to drive the band from the hotel to the gig and back. He told them that, in honor of his son, he had the lyrics with Dusty's photo, printed and framed. The band made him drive them to his house so they could sign it.
I didn't know that dust in the wind was a song, but now I get the reference in Bill and Ted where Ted's translating Socrates and says all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind is one of the easiest beginner finger picking songs - I use it to warm up before more complex tracks - so I absolutely agree with his assessment that it was an exercise
I saw them in Detroit this past fall, and right before they played Life's Been Good, Joe said "You know... It's a lot harder being 70 in the 20's than it was being 20 in the 70's!"
Babe you should do something with that... no woman! I'm just exercising my fingers! And so.... that was the story of the first ever.... Blue lady bawls...

you can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but when you pick your finger on these certain cords you apparently create a hit

Life in the Fast Lane started similarly. It was just a warm up Joe Wash played.

Nay, you just have a healthy attitude to finger exercises ! God I need to get a life .

I think it's a very similar story for "Sweet Child of Mine": finger picking exercise turns into great riff.
Malsbury
Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straights too.
Noahbalboa82
Kind of like piano exercise that turns into Dre
RedIronCrown
They forgot about Dre
CormacTheCat
It was a string skipping/alternate picking warm-up that turned into Sweet Child Of Mine. But yeah, same principle.
MachinatioVitae
Slash has gone on record saying it was built like any other riff, not from a warmup or exercise.
Chimponzoo
Twinkle-Twinkle little star's tune was written by Mozart as practice work.
WillemHellfire
I came here to say the same. +1
jekath
Yeah. And the "where do we go now" was Axl really not knowing where the song was going and it worked.
Eldibs
Yeah, if my memory serves correctly, their manager or something told them the song should be longer and they had no idea where to go with it.
Badprenup
I thought it was symbolic of being at the airport and you can't find your gate
jekath
...I like that story better and I will insist it is true from now on and you can't stop me.
BokchoyIsAWhiteVegetable
My finger exercises led to me becoming a teen parent....
aThingWithTheStufAndTheJunk
It was probably the penis in the vagina that actually did that.
BokchoyIsAWhiteVegetable
lololol
WeAllTransform
It was probably the ejaculation from the penis that actually did that.
ThomWill
It was probably the one sperm that penetrated the egg that actually, actually did that
