As someone who made decent money playing poker, don't play poker. Learn poker, THEN play poker.
If you don't reflexively know whether it's appropriate to call, raise, or fold with cards in your position, study more or lose money.
You'd be surprised how much money you can lose 'limping' in to a pot with a weak hand will cost you in average.

I'd see the flop with it unless someone is representing a well supported ace. Then I'd fold the shit out of it unless the king hit.

1. Learn math.
1. Books. 2. Online readings 2+2 forums and others. Make sure you understand the math so you can make good guesses about your Hand strength.
Lastly, hand analysis. Take notes of the hands you played and review them afterwards. not about winning the hand it's about correct decision
Don't try to put your opponent on a specific hand. Instead, you want to identify the range of hands they could possibly hold.
Jack0d
A hint not often brought up: get really good in any other card game first.
acunninglinguist
Genuine question: what is the best way to play a flopped straight? In my last few trips to Wendover to play poker, I've lost pots of $900 >>
There is no "way" to play a hand that will be the same each time. It will change based on your opponent.
Sometimes shoving flop is best against call station. Other times you should slow play
DeviledCrab
When in doubt, always bet!
gmdave
I have been in your position before and I changed that by raising a bit more on the turn. Make the 4 of a kinds uncomfortable with the raise
By 4 of a kind, I meant flush draw. Sorry wrong term! When will imgur let us edit comments?
ICryWhenICum
Depends on the other player tendencies, his stack size, etc. There is no basic strategy, every hand is different against every player
Impossible to give a general rule. Depends on flow of table and your playing style, and even then you may play it differently each time.
Anotherlevel34
Well you need to not let them see the river. And to do that you have to bet them out of the pot.
A guy with pocket aces who flops top set isn't getting out of the hand at any point.
And some crazy jack-off who wants to pay to chase runner runner... there's not a whole lot I can do other than over-betting the pot.
and $650, after flopping a straight while someone chased a running flush, and another just happened to fill his boat on the river. What do?
Odds of turning a flush draw on the flop into a flush is 35%, so 1 in 3. I generally push on flush draw and take the odds of getting nuts.
C0dewizard
if you flop a straight and either the board pairs, or their's two of any suit. you need to bet and bet big (3/4 pot - full pot).
MOST of the time. be aware of the player.. if he's a chaser, or a call-station, you may just want to keep the hand cheap and check-down.
Wackfelt
Never slowplay a straight. Make your opponent pay big for every card. That way you can also make a right decision to fold the river if (1/2)
2nd part of the comment...?
board pairs etc. Let your mindset be: I want this pot NOW, while im ahead, and if [opponent] want to chase, it's gonna cost.
I bet it both times. The $900 loss was just a bad river card. I flopped broadway, he hit top set with aces. River paired the board >>>
after he shoved post-flop. The guy who chased a river called a $100 raise (pot at around $200 pre-flop) before the turn, then another >>
You have 64.65% chance to win @ flop. and 77.27% @ turn. So in the long run you make money by getting all your chips in
That is bound to happend im afraid. You will never get him to fold his top set, and you wont get away either
$250 before the river. Had no draw and no pairs on the flop. Just paid to see it. I get fucked by the river a LOT when I flop straights
the hand where guy flopped top set, he's not going anywhere.. ever... shit like that "just happens", cant expect it, and can seldom read it

We have a rule with the friends I play with. You win with 7-2, everyone else has to fill up with an alcoholic beverage of choice and down it
whyteraven74
I once had 3-6, suited and a straight flush later, dude with a full house was mighty pissed.

What most people don't realize is these charts are meant as a basic guide, not an absolute rulebook. Beginners would use this and no one els
DiscoPhysicist
I'd see the flop with it unless someone is representing a well supported ace. Then I'd fold the shit out of it unless the king hit.
2boocoo
So this table is for sooted hands, what about something like Ks Jh or other wise known as Jack King off?
StubbornViking
King Jack off
hotdogg
No, otherwise known as Jack King off (Jacking off).
StubbornViking
Ahhhh, now I get it. I am not very quick witted.

I play live poker semi professional if anyone is actually curious how to improve their game
fathersisterberzerker
Where do you play?
PenguinTuxedo
I have played all over. Currently underground in NY. In the past: FL, PA, GA home games.

How do you do that thing where you stare into someone's soul and can tell what cards they have?
Grrrg
I never have any idea what's going on.
ramonek
I am a self learned Poker Player that has been playing for the past 4 years online. Not a pro but am interested in lessons, bring it on man!
uvare
How should I improve? Like, is there a way to practice, or do research? I play with friends, its pretty casual but I'd still like to improve
myrdrah
1. Learn math.
PenguinTuxedo
1. Books. 2. Online readings 2+2 forums and others. Make sure you understand the math so you can make good guesses about your Hand strength.
PenguinTuxedo
Lastly, hand analysis. Take notes of the hands you played and review them afterwards. not about winning the hand it's about correct decision
fathersisterberzerker
Don't try to put your opponent on a specific hand. Instead, you want to identify the range of hands they could possibly hold.
Jack0d
A hint not often brought up: get really good in any other card game first.
acunninglinguist
Genuine question: what is the best way to play a flopped straight? In my last few trips to Wendover to play poker, I've lost pots of $900 >>
PenguinTuxedo
There is no "way" to play a hand that will be the same each time. It will change based on your opponent.
PenguinTuxedo
Sometimes shoving flop is best against call station. Other times you should slow play
DeviledCrab
When in doubt, always bet!
gmdave
I have been in your position before and I changed that by raising a bit more on the turn. Make the 4 of a kinds uncomfortable with the raise
gmdave
By 4 of a kind, I meant flush draw. Sorry wrong term! When will imgur let us edit comments?
ICryWhenICum
Depends on the other player tendencies, his stack size, etc. There is no basic strategy, every hand is different against every player
zachneun
Impossible to give a general rule. Depends on flow of table and your playing style, and even then you may play it differently each time.
Anotherlevel34
Well you need to not let them see the river. And to do that you have to bet them out of the pot.
acunninglinguist
A guy with pocket aces who flops top set isn't getting out of the hand at any point.
acunninglinguist
And some crazy jack-off who wants to pay to chase runner runner... there's not a whole lot I can do other than over-betting the pot.
acunninglinguist
and $650, after flopping a straight while someone chased a running flush, and another just happened to fill his boat on the river. What do?
dontlookatmeever
Odds of turning a flush draw on the flop into a flush is 35%, so 1 in 3. I generally push on flush draw and take the odds of getting nuts.
C0dewizard
if you flop a straight and either the board pairs, or their's two of any suit. you need to bet and bet big (3/4 pot - full pot).
C0dewizard
MOST of the time. be aware of the player.. if he's a chaser, or a call-station, you may just want to keep the hand cheap and check-down.
Wackfelt
Never slowplay a straight. Make your opponent pay big for every card. That way you can also make a right decision to fold the river if (1/2)
acunninglinguist
2nd part of the comment...?
Wackfelt
board pairs etc. Let your mindset be: I want this pot NOW, while im ahead, and if [opponent] want to chase, it's gonna cost.
Wackfelt

acunninglinguist
I bet it both times. The $900 loss was just a bad river card. I flopped broadway, he hit top set with aces. River paired the board >>>
acunninglinguist
after he shoved post-flop. The guy who chased a river called a $100 raise (pot at around $200 pre-flop) before the turn, then another >>
Wackfelt
You have 64.65% chance to win @ flop. and 77.27% @ turn. So in the long run you make money by getting all your chips in
Wackfelt
That is bound to happend im afraid. You will never get him to fold his top set, and you wont get away either
acunninglinguist
$250 before the river. Had no draw and no pairs on the flop. Just paid to see it. I get fucked by the river a LOT when I flop straights
C0dewizard
the hand where guy flopped top set, he's not going anywhere.. ever... shit like that "just happens", cant expect it, and can seldom read it
DrHeinzOofenshmirtz
This is all you need to know. Enjoy playing at your local casino. They would love to have such a well educated player at the table.
ProbablyDrunkAgain
Yes. Please come in. I will buy you drinks and we will have fun. Please, come to my card room.
TheWhiteCollarBrawlerMann
As someone who spends quite a bit of time at my local casino's poker table I would welcome you with the seat to my right

This is why I stick to blackjack. People are friendly at blackjack.

If you want to play basic poker wthout money involved this is a good guide. More explanation would have been better but for basics ok

Montreal casino has a nice poker room.

Most casino's have poker rooms, at least in the US

He's not. It's like you just learned the rules of chess and decide to play against experienced players for money. It wont end well for you.
EZEKIELx25x17
Not terrible advice for beginners but the trick is to recognize what hands are playable factoring in what action has already occured...
ProbablyDrunkAgain
Yes!, I want to see you at my game. Please, show up. And bring lots of money.
UncleCeiling
I would love to play poker with you. I like to fold when I am the large blind with no raises incoming. I may not pay that much attention.
bkcantthinkofanythingclever
Exactly! You can't play K-T if someone raised 2-3 x's the blinds or even A-T

Being able to discern "tells" and the like is now secondary to math skills for many great players.Masters/Ph.D.s in math/sci aren't uncommon

A lot of it is actually knowing when to gtfo the hand...

I've got a masters in applied clinical psych (just what they give you on your way to a doctorate), and it's no help in poker whatsoever.
ImSorryFriend
I bet you're really good at TV show poker, though!
Veit
If you've got a mental illness, on the other hand...
Jayhawk92
Do you think it's worth it to get a PsyD?
Veit
That's what I'm getting so I'm biased, but I think it's definitely worth it. More (and more specific) clinical training than the MSW or PhD.
FisterC
It's a PhD where I'm from, and regarding effort (years of badly [paid] work) and average income later (about +10%), it's not worth it 1/2
FisterC
for most people, if you're not really into research. But maybe you can get a good job perspective and offer in a certain field at a company
ManufacturedMannequin
Yes, please tell
Veit
(2) Thing is, most freestanding PsyD programs are shitty degree mills, avoid those like the plague. University affiliation is a MUST.
Jayhawk92
Yea, my abnormal psych prof said most PsyD programs are just "diploma mills" and to avoid them. Which I plan to do

This.

I had a newbie (new to Holdem anyways) luck out and felt me the other day. She flopped a boat and only bet $5, in 1-2 NL, so I tried to ~
pookieeatworld
Force her out by raising, once on the flop with my straight draw, then on the turn with my straight by going all in, and she calls...
Sxthebaconbagel
Never play like a logical poker player around newbies.
WhatWhereWynn
I used to play poker at least once a month with my best friends. A few of them would play at the casino but I never did. They always said...
SupraLove
As someone who's only played poker for fun and hasn't played poker at the casino yet, do they frown upon newbies if they want to play?
gmdave
Are you kidding? The more newbies, the better. They want to leave with your money in the end. They will love you!
Stensticles
If you've played for fun and know what you're doing, you'll make money. The people that are newbs don't know anything at all.
cachuck
Let me guess....you play $1-$2 and act like you're Phil Helmuth? See it every time I play at my local casino
Stensticles
$1-2 is what the newbies play. Granted, there are a lot of pros on those tables too. But most don't know what they're doing. Easy money.
SnookerSylph
"I won $20 profit at the casino. HAH! Filthy casuals at the slots wasting all their money while I have my game of skill and intelligence"
YesmynameisGreg
This is me. I don't enjoy gambling but will go with friends. I'll allow myself to "spend" $20, and if I double it at the 1/2 tables, I quit.
blonders1
"And it only took me 5 hours."

sorryfornocapitalssorryimsorry
don't forget to take the chart with you!
aphallatosis
Taking this chart to my next game and blatantly referencing it.
villlllle
Make sure to track your cards on the sheet with your finger, and let them see it every time.
Juicyhil
But I can ask some help there from other players?
NotSarahsAlternateAccount
yes as long as you tell me what is in your hand, i will help you.
mastikator
You think they'd kick me out if they saw the chart? I'm seriously curious here
EnTaroTassadar42
not usually. most tables will kick you out for using your cell phone at the table though, so have a paper copy, dont try to use a digital 1
