It is all about pot odds. Don't play those pocket 7s if 4 people in-front of you have gone all in.

Hello, fellow poker amateurs! I too am new, and am hosting a rookie night so we can all learn using the top chart! Please, bring lots of $!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Thumbs down! My friend got a pair of 10's in Texas Holdem, looked at your chart, and we never saw him again!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ya suit doesn't matter and K-anything in late position is definitely a winning strategy

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Instructions unclear: lost my house.

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

At least you didn't lose your dick...

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It was caught in the ceiling fan and I lost the house 'as is'. Tough times, let me tell ya, matey.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

calm down there Bolton

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Doyle Brunson disagrees. 10-2 always.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

As a casino dealer I reccommend not becoming a casino dealer

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I will second this motion. Don't do it...it's a trap!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

is there a good post to read on this already? I'm intrigued. Why is it a trap?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always tell my punters when I think they are wrong... "it's a trap." I don't say it very often, I reckon I'm about 60% correct when I do

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who ever made that first tables organization is a straight douchehat, first column is pairs and the rest go by card. I get it, but I hate it

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The first column should actually be the first row. Then I'll be happy

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Discard A-9 but play 9-10? What kind of complete moron plays like that?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A-9 is asking to get outkicked.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9-10 is asking to get out everythinged

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9-10 is a poor starting hand, but what about j-10, for instance. It rivals A-10 for all the fantastic straight draws,

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(789, 89q, 9qk, qka , all nut straights) vs jqk for a straight if you have AT

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of this one time I was playing poker and I had a 2 and a 7 and I folded, and the next three cards were 2 2 7. I never fold now.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is correct play. You must learn from your mistakes.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Never?? Do you Wanna play some poker?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do you wanna build a snowman?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Going to Vegas soon. Going to get drunk and put 10 on red and black.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That is a dumb bet. You should put $10 on Red OR Black, not both duh ;-)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No no. Let him go and be dumbfounded when it lands on 0. :)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I found the first chart useful, but really unintuitive, so I made an easier-to-read version:

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unless your name is Doyle Brunson.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Isn't poker supposed to be a game where you avoid having a predictable playing pattern, like the one suggested by this chart for example ?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It really depends on how you want to come across on the table. If you have a table image of playing extremely loose people are more (1/?)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

likely to call your bets which an be used to your advantage later on in the tournament. You can also come across as a very tight player (2/?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and your opponents will likely respect your hands more, which could lead to bluffing opportunities later on too and stealing pots

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

J-9 is great but Q-7 is garbage? Also, no hand is unplayable given the right situation. This is all around bad advice.

10 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 14

I frequently play Q-7 specifically to throw off my opponents. It's my special hand.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

especially how they say to play big slick in any position. that's a good way to lose all your chips

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Shhh don't let them know

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

J-9 is the hand that beats AA the most, statistically

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What exactly are you hoping for from that Q-7?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

J-9 is my nemesis. I never play it anymore because I NEVER hit anything with it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2-7 off suit?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is good basics hand guide for rookies. You gotta start from somewhere.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oddly enough Q-7 loses more than jack nine. Too far to connect for a straight, and beat by anyone with an A-K or higher kicker.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What's a late position?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When you're one of the last people to act before the flop.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone who made decent money playing poker, don't play poker. Learn poker, THEN play poker.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you don't reflexively know whether it's appropriate to call, raise, or fold with cards in your position, study more or lose money.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You'd be surprised how much money you can lose 'limping' in to a pot with a weak hand will cost you in average.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Biggest tip is don't be afraid to fold what you're dealt. A good beginner rule of thumb is to only play the top 10% hands.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This becomes moot when you get to the level of poker where you play the person and not your cards, but sticks in online format.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ya, it's pretty easy when you're not playing with your own money.

10 years ago | Likes 335 Dislikes 2

You obviously haven't played monopoly

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*Goes all in with fake money.*

10 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 0

That's why I stopped playing online poker. When it was still around, it was far more enjoyable playing with real money. No all in EVERY hand

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I've found that if you play the higher stakes people play more seriously since the majority worked to get their "bankroll" up

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

True, but I just don't have to patience to ride the shit train to get there, even though it's pretty easy to win out in the low ones.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's why most successful business-people are sociopaths. It really is easier if you don't care about how your actions effect others.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Bit of a sweeping generalisation...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I said, "most", not all. I also said, "easier", not trivial or impossible for caring people to succeed. But capitalism is amoral and harsh.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends how you look at it, capitalism funds progress and it has had an overall positive impact on our quality of life.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a subjective opinion like all political beliefs. I believe it to a degree but it's still a very hard to proove call.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You just described Donald Trump.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

I said successful. Trump has often gone bankrupt and from many stupid ideas. He makes money purely through name recognition and cronyism.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

You said it better than I ever could. #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Strange. Americans liked stories of people who failed repeatedly and finally succeeded, until it was Trump. (Just observing, don't lynch me)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If he truly succeeds right now, everyone else will lose.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

I understand and agree a little. But an airline with gold plated toilets right after major downsizing in popularity of air travel is stupid.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Poker? But I hardly know her!

Ha! Classic! Never gets old

There's only two ways to play pocket Jacks, and they're both wrong.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact, pocket jacks are also called "fish hooks". Get it? JJ

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Also because they hook you in

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hockey sticks

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What? You've never broken someone's will to live by beating them with a 2-7? You are missing out.

10 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 0

I love it

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There was a guy in our regular game that thought he was poker god. I told him I was going to beat him with 2-7 off suit before the flop. 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

The flop had a 2 & 7 in it. I raised and told him to stay away, he didn't believe me. I got a full boat by the river & had him all in. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

We play a rule - if you win with 2-7 everyone has to pay you 2BB ($1 usually). Pots get out of control when people try to defend the bluff.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We usually have a bounty when we play if you can beat someone with 7-2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We have a rule with the friends I play with. You win with 7-2, everyone else has to fill up with an alcoholic beverage of choice and down it

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I once had 3-6, suited and a straight flush later, dude with a full house was mighty pissed.

What most people don't realize is these charts are meant as a basic guide, not an absolute rulebook. Beginners would use this and no one els

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd see the flop with it unless someone is representing a well supported ace. Then I'd fold the shit out of it unless the king hit.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So this table is for sooted hands, what about something like Ks Jh or other wise known as Jack King off?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

King Jack off

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No, otherwise known as Jack King off (Jacking off).

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How do you do that thing where you stare into someone's soul and can tell what cards they have?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I never have any idea what's going on.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am a self learned Poker Player that has been playing for the past 4 years online. Not a pro but am interested in lessons, bring it on man!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How should I improve? Like, is there a way to practice, or do research? I play with friends, its pretty casual but I'd still like to improve

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

1. Learn math.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1. Books. 2. Online readings 2+2 forums and others. Make sure you understand the math so you can make good guesses about your Hand strength.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Lastly, hand analysis. Take notes of the hands you played and review them afterwards. not about winning the hand it's about correct decision

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Don't try to put your opponent on a specific hand. Instead, you want to identify the range of hands they could possibly hold.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A hint not often brought up: get really good in any other card game first.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Genuine question: what is the best way to play a flopped straight? In my last few trips to Wendover to play poker, I've lost pots of $900 >>

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There is no "way" to play a hand that will be the same each time. It will change based on your opponent.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes shoving flop is best against call station. Other times you should slow play

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When in doubt, always bet!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have been in your position before and I changed that by raising a bit more on the turn. Make the 4 of a kinds uncomfortable with the raise

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

By 4 of a kind, I meant flush draw. Sorry wrong term! When will imgur let us edit comments?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on the other player tendencies, his stack size, etc. There is no basic strategy, every hand is different against every player

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Impossible to give a general rule. Depends on flow of table and your playing style, and even then you may play it differently each time.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well you need to not let them see the river. And to do that you have to bet them out of the pot.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A guy with pocket aces who flops top set isn't getting out of the hand at any point.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And some crazy jack-off who wants to pay to chase runner runner... there's not a whole lot I can do other than over-betting the pot.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and $650, after flopping a straight while someone chased a running flush, and another just happened to fill his boat on the river. What do?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Odds of turning a flush draw on the flop into a flush is 35%, so 1 in 3. I generally push on flush draw and take the odds of getting nuts.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you flop a straight and either the board pairs, or their's two of any suit. you need to bet and bet big (3/4 pot - full pot).

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MOST of the time. be aware of the player.. if he's a chaser, or a call-station, you may just want to keep the hand cheap and check-down.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never slowplay a straight. Make your opponent pay big for every card. That way you can also make a right decision to fold the river if (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2nd part of the comment...?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

board pairs etc. Let your mindset be: I want this pot NOW, while im ahead, and if [opponent] want to chase, it's gonna cost.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

board pairs etc. Let your mindset be: I want this pot NOW, while im ahead, and if [opponent] want to chase, it's gonna cost.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I bet it both times. The $900 loss was just a bad river card. I flopped broadway, he hit top set with aces. River paired the board >>>

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

after he shoved post-flop. The guy who chased a river called a $100 raise (pot at around $200 pre-flop) before the turn, then another >>

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You have 64.65% chance to win @ flop. and 77.27% @ turn. So in the long run you make money by getting all your chips in

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is bound to happend im afraid. You will never get him to fold his top set, and you wont get away either

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

$250 before the river. Had no draw and no pairs on the flop. Just paid to see it. I get fucked by the river a LOT when I flop straights

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the hand where guy flopped top set, he's not going anywhere.. ever... shit like that "just happens", cant expect it, and can seldom read it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

That's what I'm getting so I'm biased, but I think it's definitely worth it. More (and more specific) clinical training than the MSW or PhD.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a PhD where I'm from, and regarding effort (years of badly [paid] work) and average income later (about +10%), it's not worth it 1/2

As someone who's only played poker for fun and hasn't played poker at the casino yet, do they frown upon newbies if they want to play?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Are you kidding? The more newbies, the better. They want to leave with your money in the end. They will love you!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you've played for fun and know what you're doing, you'll make money. The people that are newbs don't know anything at all.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Let me guess....you play $1-$2 and act like you're Phil Helmuth? See it every time I play at my local casino

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 5

$1-2 is what the newbies play. Granted, there are a lot of pros on those tables too. But most don't know what they're doing. Easy money.
